I once worked at a chemical dependency treatment center as an administrative assistant. Each of the women would get a full sheet of paper to write some sort of inspiration to read daily to help them get through to recovery and beyond. This was not a Christian-based center but it was surprising how many women wrote scripture and even poems about their relationship with God.

The most memorable affirmation was written by a woman who had the worst issue of bitter anger of anyone who entered that door. I wondered what happened to her in life. I imagined that she must have been a victim of many kinds of abuse and then went on to abuse others and then herself.

I have written about Sunshine before, but her affirmation was simply that she was a new creation in Christ. I drew a butterfly of her experience. In its wings I wrote the word transformation. She ended up having the most most dramatic change in attitude. I call her Sunshine because you could see her recovery in her eyes. No longer were they piercing but deeply moved like Maya Angelo's.

Another Christian who was changed by affirmations was John Paul Jackson. He had a thriving ministry and when the anointing was on him he felt wonderful. But after the anointing lifted he became depressed. God gave him an assignment to write statements about who he was. In time his depression lifted. These statements were specific to his identity and not just every Christian's identity. It is interesting that he went on to write about needless causualties of war.

Graham Cooke has done a similar thing called crafted prayer. He collects his prophetic words and meaningful scripture and writes it out as a declarative prayer. I have combined all three ideas into my own crafted affirmations. I keec it stored on a note app on my cell phone. I read it at least twice a week or more in challenging seasons.

If you struggle with low esteem or easily are drawn into depression then gather the life-giving words and make them into something you enjoy reading. It does not have to be complex or long-winded.
