Christians Do Good Works Because Our Salvation is Guaranteed

This study was motivated by a sermon from Pastor Steve Lawes of the Vineyard in Big Pine Key Florida. They offer five live streaming services each week and a free online Bible college. The Vineyard is a great place and a light shining in the darkness in the Keys.

I did not go to college, but I have watched a scene like this in many movies. Mary sends off an application to the college of her dreams and then waits anxiously. Then one day, she opens the mailbox, and there it is, a letter from the college. She gathers mom and dad together and opens it. She has been accepted! Happiness overwhelms all of them and the whole family jumps for joy. This acceptance letter is her guarantee of entrance into the college of her dreams. Without it, she would not be allowed entrance.

The month is February, and college for Mary does not start until September of that year. But that does not stop her from preparing for her life in college. She starts immediately and buys the team jersey and other clothes in the school colors. She places a bumper sticker on her car and her parent’s car. She starts to read all about her new college and her new hometown. She tells everyone she goes to Michigan State. Her parents even notice that her behavior changes, as she now acts more grown up. Filled with life and joy, Mary is in full-blown college woman mode, and she has not even attended her first day yet.

The Holy Spirits guarantee we have when we believe is similar to Mary’s acceptance letter into college. We know we are now guaranteed acceptance into heaven. God’s promise and guarantee, are in fact, much better than any guarantee man could ever provide. Jesus did not come to see if we can qualify, He fully qualified us for entrance.

giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. Col 1:12

Our Father already sees us with Him, because what he has promised is always as good as done. He sees us in the righteousness of Christ and nothing can change this transformation.

This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, Rom 3:22 NIV

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Isa 54:17 KJV

Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father, and we are seated in Him. He will forever be righteous and therefore, we will too.

and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Eph 2:6 NAS

When we are born again, we are given a new Spirit that is holy, sanctified righteous and perfected. Our Spirit is sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit. This seal protects our Spirit from any contamination from the world and our fallen flesh.

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave [us] the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. 2 Cor 1:21-22 NAS

Think of a letter to the King and on that letter is a seal that keeps the contents secure and assures it has not been opened before He receives it.

…you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. 2 Cor 3:3 NAS

No one but the King has authority to open this letter. We are that letter to the King with the words written in Christ's blood. The letter is sealed by the Holy Spirit, the guarantee of our redemption to our King and us. Our guarantee letter of acceptance into God’s Kingdom, into heaven.

So, the question is, are you preparing for your life as a co-heir with Christ in the Kingdom of God? God always keeps His promises, and you have your Fathers guarantee and the Holy Spirits seal on this one.

The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him. Eph 1:14 NLT

and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ … Rom 8:17

We do not do works to guarantee our salvation; we do works because our salvation is guaranteed.

So, let’s get busy and do the next right thing.
