WHEN THE TRUMPET SOUNDS

"Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:51-57)

Well, am I tired! Seems like every day that passes it gets harder to recoup my energy.  Sometimes I wish I had not chosen the trumpet as my college music major. And to that end, why did I choose become a concert conductor? Oh well, I'll just put up my horn for now and try to get some sleep.

Then it happened. I was carried away into another strange dream. It seems that I have been having many of these strange dreams lately. They all seem to be a reoccurring relationship. What does it all mean, I wondered.

Unexpectedly, I found myself in a strange far-away land, overlooking a rather large city. As my eyes scanned the landscape,  I couldn't help but notice this rather large structure bearing a distinctive gold plated dome.

"Wow, I must be in Jerusalem in Israel, but just how did I get here and what is the purpose of all this travel halfway around the globe?" I pondered to myself.

About the same time, in concert with my looking around the area, as if popping out of the mountain rocks, a bizarre outlandish character appeared dressed in Bible garb, draped with a traditional Jewish prayer shawl and wearing the traditional Jewish yarmulke. What was so bizarre was, he was carrying a rather large strangely shaped horn.

I immediately approached this gentleman, and started a conversation by asking, "Where am I? Who are you, and why the strange looking horn?"

"My son, this is a Jewish trumpet known as a shofar and I'm simply the bearer of good news.  Yes, my friend and I'm about to  blow my trumpet with an all-important announcement. You see, it's the "Feast of Trumpets," he proclaimed.

Then continuing in like manner to an old country parson, he appeared to be giving me a providential message of sorts.

"Just as the Spring Feasts of Passover, Firstfruits and  Pentecost are all prophetically related to the death, resurrection and ascension of Yeshua, and the sending of the Holy Spirit, the Fall Feasts pertain to His second coming. The Feast of Trumpets relates to the last trumpet that shall sound when He comes again in glory."

"Oh, now I get it, we must be in Israel. But are you saying blowing your trumpet will signal the end of the world?" I continued in some bewilderment.

"Oh no, I'm not saying that at all, for no one knows when that time will be, other than the Father Himself," as he quoted two Scripture passages from Matthew's gospel. (Matthew 24:36, 42)  "I'm only here to announce this special holiday for our people," he replied rather hastily.

"OK then, considering what you just said, I have studied Jewish law in college. So here's my question.  Why is it that the holy days of Israel appear in the Law in one form or another, except for the Feast of Trumpets?  Why is the Feast of Trumpets missing?" I ask.

My questioning seemed to disturb this nice old man as he continued what appeared to be a sermon.  

"You see, my son, God's final mysteries don't focus on the beginning but on the end. This Feast of Trumpets announces the closing of a sacred cycle.  And by comparison, the blowing of the trumpet will announce the end of the age."

"And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL  GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other." (Matthew 24:31)

"Ok, if I understand Scripture correctly, the blowing of the shofar or trumpet will call all true Christians, living and dead, to meet the Lord in the air," I said.

"You are absolutely right, my son. The sound of the trump will signal what is referred to as the Rapture. Both living and dead saints will meet Him in the air. And there are no prophecies remaining to be fulfilled before this Rapture occurs. It can now come at any time. And you must be ready to meet Him", he responded happily, apparently regaining his composure, as he quoted again from (I Thess. 4:16-17)  

"Wow, he really knows his scripture! It's if he had written it himself." I thought to myself.

He then continued," "The sound of the trumpet will surely be a wakeup call. For the dead in Christ will be raised, then the remainder of God's people will also join them in the air." (I Cor.15:52)

"And in addition, as like in olden times, the sound of the trumpet is the beginning of the King of Kings' reign as the kingdom of the world will be the kingdom of our Lord.   You see, our faith is not in what was, but in what is to come, the future," he then concluded.

Then, as the sun began to set over the ancient city of Jerusalem, this nice Jewish man suddenly draped his prayer shawl over his head and standing straight and tall, commenced blowing his shofar trumpet.  With that our conversation abruptly ended, as he quickly and suddenly disappeared into the mountainous wilderness.

However, as he was disappearing, I heard a loud, piercing voice as if coming from the clouds of the sky, with which the following announcement was given:

 "Live for what is soon to come, my child.  Be ready for that day, the day of the trumpet calling you home.  For He will return as he left."

About that time I woke up. I must have suddenly drifted off to sleep, for my trumpet was still lying across my lap. As I picked up my horn and started to play, that strange  message, given to me in the sky, kept bugging me.

What did I do then? You guessed it, for after searching and locating Mom's old family Bible, I looked up the reference passage given to me in the sky. (Acts 1:9-11)

And at the same time, Mom's memories began to haunt me rather profusely. Not only did I remember Mom preaching to me, but I also happened to picture Mom standing there with her old family Bible open to, you guessed it, (I John 1:8-9).

When I turned to that particular passage in Mom's Bible, she had written a note which read, "Praying for my son." That did it. For sure that really did it, I began crying profusely.

On bended knee, I made my plea. Suddenly, no more worries over the job. No more restless, sleepless nights.  No more headaches in the middle of the night. I now have the peace Mom had prayed for all those many years.

Was my dream a direct providential message?  And just who was that kind old Bible character, who just happened to appear in that old city of Jerusalem? Well, your guess is as good as mine.  It really doesn't matter.  For you see, the message surely did ring true with me that night and that's all that matters, for I'm now waiting for the soon-to-come trumpet blast. Amen!

Trumpets in Biblical times were either made from rams’ horns (shofars) or from silver, and could be blown by the priests and leaders. There were different sounds for different purposes:

The sound of the trumpet had many connotations in the Bible:

God’s power to raise the dead (I Corinthians 15:52), (I Thessalonians 4:16) The proclamation of the gospel (Psalms 89:15) The bold and faithful preaching of prophets (Isaiah 58:1) ( Hosea 8:1) (Joel 2:1) The latter day judgments (Revelation 8:2 and 13)

The trumpets signal the sacrifice for atonement which Yeshua fulfilled. They convey the preaching of the Word and victory over death. You see,

The sacrifice has been paid.
The battle has been won.
We can freely enter into his precious rest and feast with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
