As I watch you sleep, my little one
I wonder if you know-
How fast the time is going by
How rapidly you grow.
Not long ago it seems to me
You were so small and red-
And only asked the simple things
Like being warm and fed.

A few years past, I turned around
And much to my surprise-
I saw a small and handsome boy
With mischief in his eyes.
Rattles to trucks to daddy’s tools
How fast the time did go-
My little boy was growing up-
Why must you hurry so?

For there are things I left unsaid
And times I let go by-
When my patience had grown thin
The times I made you cry.
The time I didn’t take with you
To teach you things I should-
If only time would just stand still
Well maybe then I could.

The years went by, o sons of mine
Thru school and scouts and church-
You learned to swim and hit a ball
You had begun your search.
Year by year your stature grew
Your character was strong-
And much to my surprise again
Your school years then were gone.

Then off you went thru tears of mine
I had to let you roam-
One by one you left the nest
And went out on your own.
Where once my blanket covered you
Safely within my care-
Now I wrapped you up each night
With a coverlet made of prayer.

Thru these years you blessed me more
Than words could ever tell-
You gifted me with many trips
Lodgings, jewels as well.
Babies filled my heart and arms
Daughters to call my own-
Love expressed in many ways
Still the time has flown.

Looking back on those early years
I wonder in my heart-
After all was said and done
What good did I impart?
Did I communicate to you
The fullness of my love-
Your worth, value, God’s plan for you
Designed from up above.

You see my sons, He’d given me
The wonder of your births-
That I might be your nurturer
All my days on earth.
The greatest thing I had to give
Was love, and faith in Jesus-
For He alone has carried me
He alone will keep us.

It could not be happening
It caught me by surprise-
It was a shock to my whole being
All heaven heard my cries.
One of you had to leave
To return to your heavenly home-
Leaving behind only memories-
Of love you had always shown.

I know the LORD makes no mistakes
He times things perfectly-
So I will trust He knows what’s best,
That He acted lovingly.

The future of our family
Rests safely in His hands.
One day we’ll be together again,
To walk that heavenly land.
