Let Go, and Let God
By
Christian Belyea
Worrying is a really ugly wart.
I mean, why should we worry when it is written: “And my God shall supply all our need according to His richness in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19)? Okay…so, is this tiny verse sufficient to salve our worries? Maybe not. But there are scores of other Scriptures from God to quell our disquieted spirits.
For instance, Proverbs 3:5 promises: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall make straight your paths.” Now, to “trust in the LORD with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding” simply means that when we acknowledge God in all our ways, obey Him, trust Him, submit our wills to His, and turn our needs, wants, and problems over to Him, He will come through for us—some how, some way, my fretful friend…sooner of later. Count on it! That’s the way He has always been with me, anyway. And I am no more special to Him than you are, pal. For God has no favorites (Galatians 2:6)
Not only this, but also Christ commanded us not to worry when He said: “Therefore, do not worry, saying ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles (non-believers) seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:31-33).
“Seeking first the kingdom of God” simply means going to our gracious God with our need or problem, fully trusting Him to pull us through, surrendering our will to His will, and then forgetting about it. That’s right. Let it go. When we do that, we can be sure His will shall be for His glory and our benefit. Things will work out. Trust me. And “seeking His righteousness” only means obeying Him to the best of our ability, even if we keep stumbling, for God honors those who are at least trying to obey Him. “Seeking His righteousness” also means forgetting about fretting, for it only leads to doubts about God’s ability to assume control of our lives. I mean, after all, we do belong to God, don’t we? And He is in control of our lives, isn’t He? So. why wouldn’t He take considerably good care of us, I ask?
Moreover, my fretful friend, God promises in Proverbs 10:3 “The LORD will not allow the righteous soul to famish.” This means, God will move heaven and earth to make sure our needs are met, whether our needs are for food, help with the rent, mending a broken friendship, getting a job, whatever. I mean, in no way will our faithful Father see past any kind of need in our lives and let us starve in any area of our lives.
Now, in my experience, as one who once perpetually worried about everything, God proved to come through for me every time. In fact, my grandmother, a Christian, used to tell me as a kid that things always work out in the end. Though I didn’t understand her back then, I do now. For as I have walked with our Redeemer about 25 years, He has always met my many needs, through some means, no matter how dire the direction my life may have seemed to be going. Yes, He has always come through for me—even at the very last minute at times. Why at the last minute, you may ask? Well…that’s because He wanted to stretch and strengthen my faith in Him to fulfill my need, no matter how long He took to fork over the need I was seeking to be met. Such is God’s way at times… (Isaiah 55:8,9).
No, the Anointed One doesn’t want us to be anxious about anything. I guess that’s why He proclaims through the Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:6: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
I know that peace now. I know it because God is my Dad, and dads always take care of their kids. I also know it because as the Apostle John so pointedly put it in 1 John 5:14,15: “Now this is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”
So, our needs and problems are certainly of paramount importance to God. And trust me, God will graciously attend to those needs and problems that seem to aggravate, grieve, and grasp our hearts with anxiety. That is why we thank Him after our requests, knowing full well He knows what we need, and he will heed our needs. Always!
Now, try this instead of fruitlessly fretting: Write out these precious promises on a piece of paper, and then put them some place prominent, as I have done…somewhere you will see them often, until you know them by heart.
And don’t worry—just hurry…and ask God!
