“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” Matthew 12:43-45 NIV
The life of a Christian is a process. When we turn our lives over to Christ, we begin a new life, a life living in His ways. We must begin reading the Word, praying, and doing God’s will. Otherwise we are like the house that was swept clean, but unoccupied. Our heart must be occupied with all that comes from Christ. We cannot return to our old ways. We must abide in Christ. He has saved us, and we must live according to His will. To return to our old ways of life would put us in a position worse than our original state. We would have seen the saving power of Christ yet have turned away from it to go back to our old way of life. Evil spirits will dictate more and more to us that we need to live for the here and now. We will have given up the most precious gift we have ever received.
If we give ourselves to Christ, we must make it a permanent commitment. We will at times fail the Lord, but, by returning to Him with a repentant heart, we can rest assured that we are forgiven of our straying from the path He leads us upon. Live forever in Christ.
