If there was only one red rose on the counter to take, I would grab it, run and place it in your hands. You are my one true love. You saw me in 1984, sickly, abandoned and helpless. You spoke for me and gave me your name. You are my one true love. You took me into your arms, nursed my brokenness and healed me. You cared for my children, a father to the fatherless. With your love and strength, I learned to live again. You are my one true love. As I gained strength I also went on to lose more of my loved ones.
Two men who were a pillar of strength to our family passed on. My brother Mike in 1991 and my father in 2001. But from a mere weakling in 1984, you helped me take on more family responsibilities. I achieved things that I never dreamt I would be able to. You have always been by my side, my one true love. You are my inspiration, my guide, and my refuge.
I went on lose more. Three of my young sisters and a young brother passed away in 2004 & 2006.Grief became like a coat in those days. But in the quietness and sadness of it all, I had you, my one true love. You wiped away my tears, helped me take on more responsibilities. Sometimes I felt like life was so unfair to me. But then you made me look at my mother and try to understand her grief too. You are my one true love.
She was my best friend, my baby sister, we understood each other. We always drove everywhere together. Cancer came for her so quickly in 2014. I lost the one person I thought I was going to grow old with. But your love and strength remained constant. You carried me through the pain. You are my one true love.
You gave me the rare opportunity to care for a dying person. She was a stranger when we met, but in that month while she was on hospice we became good friends and prayer partners. I had suffered so much in life and you knew I had the strength in me that she needed for her journey to you. You are my one true love.
Ours is not an “I will love you for now, till we meet again next time,” kind of love, No. It is an “I got you babe” kind of love. You watch over me and you hear me even when I am not speaking. I have lived among many, even though their numbers kept dwindling. I have shared my life with many. I have been known, valued and appreciated.
I live in a foreign land and I walk alone now, but I am not afraid. I have you and you are all I need, my one true love.They may not know me, understand me and might even dislike me. But in everything, there is a purpose. You created me in my mother’s womb and you know everything about me. You have a purpose for my life. I could have died too. But you spared me. Every morning that I wake up is a blessing to your name and every night I go to sleep is a whisper to you, my one true love. “I got you, babe.”
