“… Great is Your faithfulness” (Lam 3:22-24 NLT)
Known as the ‘weeping prophet’, Jeremiah ministered warnings to Israel during a bleak and desperate time in their history. Ultimately, Babylonian enemies destroyed the city of Jerusalem and carried them into captivity. Indeed, they experienced a religious earthshaking. They assumed either God had been defeated or He had abandoned His chosen people. Nonetheless, Jeremiah spoke powerful but reassuring messages of hope. Soon the Israelites received Jeremiah’s comforting words and became strengthened by his proclamations,“The steadfast and faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies begin afresh each morning” (Lam 3:22-24). It’s likely that Jeremiah himself drew courage from Moses’ wilderness journeys because ‘daily manna’ fell from heaven. Morning by morning, wafer-like bread floated down by faithful God. Each day Moses' congregation were satisfied as they tasted God’s lovingkindness.
Like Jeremiah, Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem crying, ‘your enemies will crush you to the ground because you didn’t accept (my) salvation’ (Luke 19:44). Jesus yearned for His followers to understand that He was the true bread dispatched from heaven. Furthermore, those who accept Jesus can experience this all-consuming love and allegiance. More certain, God supplies our needs since His goodness cannot be exhausted. Then before Jesus was crucified, He broke bread and ate with the disciples “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). This precious deed clearly signified that Jesus' death and resurrection would bring them (and us) eternal life.
Dear reader, Christ the Bread works on our behalf (Isaiah 64:6). Put differently, the ‘righteous are never forsaken or their children begging for bread' (Psalm 37:25). Bursting with joy, we may marvel over these promises. But if we truly believe, heaven awaits our arrival. See you there!
