What is this upcoming year for you? How do you want it to go? What is your goal?
For me, I have dubbed this upcoming year the year of Why Not?
It is a year of stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things.
I already started this year by painting plates, creating furniture, branding my businesses and cutting my hair.
Stepping out of my comfort zone reminds me of the story of Peter.
Jesus told the disciples to go to the other side of the lake. He wanted to be alone to pray.
The disciples launch out in the boat when a storm came.
I can imagine the boat rock violently, the wind–fierce. Maybe they saw lightning and hear the rumblings of thunder.
Nevertheless, the storm frightened them.
When a lone figure crossed the lake toward them, they panicked.
Perhaps they rubbed their eyes to see if they really saw a man walking on water.
“But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid (Matthew 14:17).'”
Probably in a calm, gentle Voice like it was the most natural thing to walk on water. To Him, it was.
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water (Matthew 14:28).”
“’Come,’ he said (Matthew 14:29).”
In Matthew 14: 29-30, Peter stepped out of the boat and onto the water.
As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he didn’t sink. He did, in fact, walk on the water.
When he turned his eyes away from Jesus and to the storm, he started to sink.
Jesus didn’t rebuke him. He simply saved Peter from drowning.
Like Peter, we need to step out of our comfort zones, the coziness of the familiar.
We need to try new things, go new places, even eat new foods.
We will meet people we never met before. People who will be influential in our lives.
We will learn new things about ourselves. Maybe we will find ourselves painting, writing, singing. Perhaps we will grow to love a certain town or city.
We are like frogs in a well, thinking, “Hey, this is nice and cozy. I don’t need anything else.” Until the day we jump out of the well and discover the pond and then the ocean.
There is so much more for us to do with our lives. Places we are to go. People we are to meet. Projects we are supposed to take on.
Only if we stay where we are, we will not discover them. We will live a status quo life.
God didn’t call us to live like everyone else. God called us to be His children. We are children of the King. Let’s act like it.
