Family
After eating dinner, Gui and Kennedie stayed up two more hours just talking and relaxing on the sofa, then turned in for the night. Being the summertime, it was a rather warm night, so Gui wore a T-shirt and boxers, and Kennedie wore a sleeveless lingerie nightgown. When they climbed into bed, Gui sighed. "I'm sorry, Kennedie," he said.
Kennedie turned and looked at him. "For what?"
"Making you put up with me being upset about my parents and brother the way I do. I was literally venting out anger tonight, and I can't stop looking at the picture of my parents and my brother when all you want to do is relax and enjoy the evening. I'm afraid this often keeps me from not being very pleasant company," Gui replied, "and it shouldn't be this way, because you're my wife. I don't want you to think I'm not much fun to be around because you see me as someone who's always sad." He touched her cheek gently.
"I don't see you that way," Kennedie said. "I don't see you as someone who's not fun to be around or always sad. Because I'm your wife, you're supposed to confide in me. We're best friends. I love being with you every day and every night. Don't worry. I don't think you're a drag or a constantly sad or miserable person."
"Good, because I'm never really miserable as long as you're around. Come here, baby. Come closer." When Kennedie did, Gui pulled her into a hug and kissed her forehead. "I love you more than anything in this world. I would never trade you for anything or anyone. You fit so perfectly in my arms."
Kennedie smiled and sighed. "Being in your arms is the next best thing to being in Heaven," she said as she snuggled against his chest. "God brought you to me when He put it on your heart to move out of Beijing and come here."
Gui smiled, too, then looked sad. "I keep wishing my parents would see how happy you make me. I'd love them and Ping to be back in my life so they can see how blessed they are to have you in our family."
"Let's pray for them," Kennedie said. She and Gui closed their eyes, and Gui prayed, "Dear Heavenly Father, I know You know that right now my parents' hearts are hardened and they want nothing to do with me, because they disagree with my life decisions. Please soften their hearts so that they will want to receive You and be a part of my new life here and see how blessed they are to have Kennedie in their family and be happy that I have had the best years of my life in the States. In Jesus's name, Amen."
"Amen," whispered Kennedie. She and Gui kissed each other good night, then turned off the light and went to sleep.
