Shame just may be the greatest consequence of sin that there is. Why do I say that? Because shame is something that will cause one to shrink back from the Lord Jesus at His return instead of reaching out eagerly and confidently, and excitedly to meet Him, as a bride would to meet her groom. In the illustration Jesus used of the neighbor knocking at the door to borrow bread at midnight, it was his persistence that finally won the bread he needed not the closeness of his relationship with the neighbor. Persistence is also rendered "shamelessness." Shame will also diminish our persistence in prayer if allowed to do so. Shame is a shadow that can be cast across many years of time breaking down our resistance to spiritual affliction, but it is also a shadow that can be dispelled by Christ's merciful light. The first epistle and first chapter of John assures us that the stain of shame, no matter how deep, can be cleansed once and for all by the powerful sacrificial blood of Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the shame of the world as He takes away its sin.
