‘So we prayed to our God, and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.’ Nehemiah 4:9 (NRSV)
Distractions abound in life. Distractions that can be detrimental to our walk of faith or distractions that may appear good, even worthy. Nehemiah is our example of a man who, despite the distractions, remained committed to his faith in God and steadfastly continued to act upon his calling. Nehemiah knew exactly where and how God had called him to serve and he applied himself wholeheartedly. His work was too important to leave for anything less. Staying focussed on what God calls us to do is the priority.
Nehemiah believed God would equip him for the work and then diligently set about completing it. His example is our inspiration and encouragement. Nehemiah devotes himself to the building of the wall in Jerusalem rather than the building of his earthly wealth and influence; knowing this was the best way to serve his people. Despite the distraction of his enemies, Nehemiah said, ‘Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your kin, your sons, your daughters, your wives and your homes.’ (Nehemiah 4:14). Faith and action working together. Let’s believe that God will help while we do our part.
Take a few minutes to pray writing down how God asks us to serve. Whatever he instructs is important, no matter what small act comes to mind. Select one or two to pursue, believing we have been blessed, called and given by God for the sake of others. This is our day where faith and action can work together in love!
