Children
"Come on, Little Colt!" Mama Mare whinnied, walking toward the dirt mound that was in the middle of Farmer Charlie's pasture. "It's time for your nap!" Every day, Little Colt would take a nap on the dirt mound that was in the middle of the pasture.
"Oh, Mama, do I have to take a nap now?" Little Colt complained. He was having a lot of fun galloping around the pasture. "I want to play some more!"
"Come on, darling," Mama Mare nickered, nuzzling her baby. "It's time for you to take your nap. "When you wake up, you can play again."
"Why do I need to take a nap?" Little Colt asked.
"All babies need to get enough sleep and eat enough so they can grow," Mama Mare explained. "Farmer Charlie and his wife Sandy's children, Chloe and Caleb, did, and so did Bessie's calves, Nanny's kids, Cattie's kittens, Fluffy's puppies, Mrs. Pink's piglets, and Cotton Ball's lambs. None of them could have grown to be big and strong if they didn't eat plenty of food and get plenty of sleep. It's just how God made babies."
"Will I still need to eat and sleep when I get bigger?" Little Colt asked.
"Yes," Mama Mare answered. "All people and animals need their sleep, but especially when they're babies, because without food and rest, babies can't grow."
"Was I eating and sleeping in your tummy, Mama?" Little Colt asked.
"Yes, my little one," Mama Mare said softly. "God made you able to eat and sleep even before you were born. Sometimes you would lie so still inside my tummy that I knew you were asleep. Sometimes I would get so hungry that I would want more hay and want to eat from all of the fruit trees and all of the fruits and vegetables in the pasture, something I don't usually do, but the reason I got so hungry is because you needed to eat, and while you were in my tummy, everything I ate went down into my tummy right to you, and then you would eat it. I had to make sure I ate enough for you to eat enough so that you could grow and be born a healthy colt."
"I see," said Little Colt. He lay down on the dirt mound and yawned. "Mama, I'm getting sleepy," he said, "but I still want to play."
Mama Mare smiled. "I promise you can play after your nap," she said. "The pasture will be here. Sweet dreams now." She bent down and nuzzled Little Colt and licked him on his forehead.
