Once I was intending to play flute for a lunch crowd at a senior center. I went jogging into the building as I often do, carrying the flute under my arm, when I stumbled and went sprawling headlong facedown on the pavement with flute clattering down in the driveway ahead of me. A couple of concerned bystanders inquired and made sure that I was all right, as I scrambled to my feet. I made light of it as I gathered up my flute and kept moving, thanking them as I went. But I soon realized I was hurt worse than I initially thought. I had abrasions in at least five places and was bleeding from a couple of them. “Oh well,” I resigned myself, “no music today after all.” It so happened that one of the bingo prizes given just before I arrived was a dispenser of band-aids. The kind winner of that dispenser was quick to provide band-aids for me and I went to the rest room to clean the wounds and apply the band-aids. I decided later to play the flute after all. I can’t describe how right that felt, or what kind of victory it was that made the notes I played even more meaningful, at least to me.
Life often tries to snuff out our light and silence our music if we let it. So does our spiritual adversary if we allow it. We are tempted to let disagreements, even heated disagreements deter us from pursuing relationships that have been mutually beneficial and pleasant for the most part. I like the counselor who refused to refer to arguments as arguments, instead he called them “intense fellowship.” But when we can come back together after a clash, and concentrate instead on what is best and most edifying in the relationship, we are indeed walking by faith more than sight, and the “music” of that gesture ascends even higher as a fragrant incense in Father’s nostrils! Amen.
