……… and have obeyed and done according to all the Jonadab our father commanded us. Jeremiah 35: 10 NASB
Ever heard or read about the Rechabites? It’s fine if you haven’t, because my reaction to the exact question was “the Recha-who?” Is that in the Bible? Yea, it’s actually in there.
The Rechabites obeyed the instructions of their fore father for many years. Generations upon generations had come to learn about the instructions and pledged to live by them. This “fore father” was a man just like them but somehow his words carried so much weight. They would not build houses but live in tents and will not plant seeds, have vineyards or drink wine. Why? Because their father, Jonadab told them to do that. They did not try to ask questions, argue out their point as to why that won’t be feasible as the years went by or didn’t try to find their way around the instructions by finding it’s Greek or Hebrew meaning. No, they just obeyed.
Obviously, they were able to overcome the temptation to disobey their father as they saw everyone around them owning houses and land, acquiring wealth from the proceeds of their vineyards and enjoying wine produced from its fruits. They were not obeying the instructions to gain attention, yet, God had been observing them all along and saw the quality of their obedience. His children, the Israelites on the other hand were doing the exact opposite. If these people were able to obey a man, dead for ages, how come they are not able to obey the All-powerful living God.
Obeying the rules of men and the norms of the world doesn’t seem to be difficult for us yet we struggle to obey God. Can we learn from the Rechabites and give God Almighty our devotion and total submission? He is worthy of it.
