THE ERRORS OF BALAAM
Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. Jude 1:11;
In the days when hearing God and seeing visions was very rare among the gentile nations of Mesopotamia, Prophet Balaam stood out as an oracle of God. His knowledge of the true God gave him unusual access to divine secrets, and this informed the accuracy and precision of his prophecies and revelations of things which were yet to be unfolded. Considering the heights that Balaam attained in his relationship with the Almighty God, it could never have been anybody’s imagination or expectation that such a man, who had accurate knowledge of the God of Israel, would slip so fast into error and utterly fall from grace. It’s indeed sad and heartbreaking to know that Prophet Balaam, with all the great anointing and unusual grace under which he operated, actually went down in history as a diviner, a soothsayer and a false prophet!
Looking at the way Balaam ended, one cannot help but keep wondering how such a man, who had the opportunity to interact so closely with divinity, would suddenly turn his back on God to form alliance with Satan. The story of Balaam’s life, his ministry and especially how he ended his journey in life, leaves the end time generation with vital lessons, so that we can avoid the pitfalls, which the scriptures in the book of Jude verse 11 describes as ‘ERRORS OF BALAAM’.
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 1Corithians 10:11;
Error #1-Balaam Entertained and Opened His Doors to Wrong Men
The emissaries Balak sent to Balaam went on a definite mission. The mission was to get Israel –the covenant people of God cursed. This mission clearly was against the purpose of God, considering the covenant of blessings that has been established on Israel as the seed of Abraham. Balak and the lords of Moab were silently acting the script that has been written from the pit of hell targeted towards scuttling what the Almighty God had purposed to accomplish through Israel His people. When Balaam got to know the purpose for which Balak’s emissaries came, he would have done himself good by not opening his doors to them, especially when he became aware that their mission did not align with God’s purpose. Unfortunately, Balaam opened his doors and entertained wrong men against the expectation of God.
That God was not expecting to find the lords of Moab under Balaam’s roof, was attested to by the question He (God) asked him (Balaam) the night the men slept over in his house. Numbers Chapter 22:9 says ‘And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?’. The expression ‘what men are these’ strongly suggests that the men, which Balaam opened his doors to accommodate and entertain, were wrong men. This error earned Balaam God’s wrath, especially when he again opened his doors to the men having been fully aware that they were on a mission that was against the purpose of God.
If Balaam had not entertained or opened his doors to Balaam’s emissaries in the first instance, may be his journey to destruction would not have been triggered! The downfall of many truly called and anointed men of God began the day they allowed wrong men into their lives and ministry. It’s very dangerous to open the doors of your life or ministry to men you’re not sure of their spiritual standing and inclination. When you sense that the purpose and pursuit of someone is not in sync with God’s purpose or mandate for your life and ministry, the greatest good you will do yourself is to avoid them like a plague! There’s great spiritual implication on the kind of association you decide to keep as a child of God. The scripture in 2John 1:11 says ‘If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds’. With this scripture, you should have an idea of how serious the matter of wrong association is viewed by God.
Who are your associates? Can you for once, carefully and critically analyze the people you have opened the doors of your life and ministry to? Hope wrong men are not already occupying space in your life? Hope you have not admitted a ‘Jonah’ into the boat of your destiny? This assessment becomes important, especially in view of the fact that the error that led Balaam to journey of eternal damnation, came about through opening of his doors to wrong men.
Brutal Truths about Wrong Associatio
If you’re a friend to someone who’s God’s enemy, you’ve become God’s enemy yourself, and God will not hesitate to give you the treatment of an enemy!
If you associate with someone who’s under curse, you can’t be free from curse, you’re hooked by extension!
Where you walk, stand and sit determines where you end! Psalm 1:1 says ‘Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful’.
