Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. Luke 23:50-56 NIV
Although not mentioned in Luke’s account of Christ’s burial, Nicodemus also participated in preparing Christ’s body for burial. Here were two men that belonged to the group of Jewish leaders, yet their minds and hearts had not been closed to who Christ was, as were the remainder of the leaders. They believed in Christ, and wanted Him to receive a decent burial.
The women followed along, as they needed to know where the body would be put, so that might bring fresh spices to anoint the body in future days.
Little did any of these followers of Christ know what was forthcoming. Even though Christ had made reference before to His resurrection, no one understood what He was saying. None of them could understand, as God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. All so happy we are that this statement is true.
What was done by God cannot be done by man. Through the resurrection of our Lord, we know that His rising is the first fruit, the rising to eternal life of all those who believe in Him. Praise be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever, AMEN!!
