The Unforgiveable Sin

            “Therefore I say to you, “every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matthew 12:31-32, NKJ).

            It is a very mysterious thing, the unforgivable sin. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This is never more in evidence than in Genesis 6, “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man” (Genesis 6:3, NKJ). There does come a time with a person, that they can become so hardened in their heart towards God, that He simply removes His eternity from their heart and casts that man or woman into hell, while they are still living on the earth. Do you ever wonder why men like Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin and the like, never stopped their annihilation and destruction of humanity? How could they never stop and contemplate within themselves, the pure wicked evil that permeated all their evil intents? Just as the Bible describes in Genesis 6:5, “these men’s every intent and thought of their hearts were only evil continually” (NKJ).

            How can a man or woman go so far down? The reason is, is that they have ignored the warnings, rebukes and everything else that God can throw at them to convict them of their sin which would lead them to repentance. People in this situation can never be brought back to Life and God finally withdraws Himself from that person completely “and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (Exodus 11:10, NKJ). “Then he (Herod) questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing” (Luke 23:9, NKJ). Literally, hell is unleashed upon the earth through that person and there is no hope for that man or woman. Have you ever had the Holy Spirit not allow you to pray for a specific person? That is because that person can no longer be reconciled back to God. They have willed their self-interest and their self-absorption against God’s will and interests to the point where they have become irretrievable.

            This is what sin does and why God takes it so seriously. It’s so subtle that so many do not realize the magnitude of consistent, willful sinning against God. It starts out small, but if not confessed and not repented of for long enough, then we may find ourselves in this very same circumstance, “My spirit shall not always strive with man.” Where God finally gives us over to what we have willed in our lives, to live a life completely void of consideration, acknowledgment and care of God. Sin not confessed and repented of, always leads to more sin not confessed and repented of. If we think this cannot happen to us, then read of what happened to King Saul in 1 Samuel Chaps. 13-31, “So Saul asked counsel of God, “shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel?” but He did not answer him that day” (1 Samuel 14:37, NKJ). King Saul, like Pharoah, their confessions of wrong doing became abominations to God “Even his prayer is an abomination” (Proverbs 28:9, NKJ). Thank God, because of His unrelenting loving kindness towards people, the mark to get to this point where King Saul, Pharoah, Herod, etc., were at with God is a long, long ways off. But if we continually and willfully go against God’s interests and caring for our lives, He will eventually give us over to Satan and this is not where we want to be. Always stay close to God in holiness, obedience and humility. Keep on short accounts with God in regards to sin. Take sin most seriously in your life and let God root it out of you by walking and abiding in Him daily. Hate evil, love good.
