The Blame Game

            “Then the man said, “The woman who You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate” (Genesis 3:12, NKJ). Adam, once confronted with his sin, instead of fessing up to it and taking responsibility for his actions, he instead blamed God and sold out his own wife. The blame game, the shifting of one’s wrongful actions onto another, in order to save face, to save one’s skin. This is a most popular thing to do nowadays, especially in America, where it is as much of Americana as is apple pie and football.

            The devil has had a field day with this sin. Once he can convince someone that even though their actions or way of life may be wrong, as long as you have someone else to blame for it, you’re in the clear and you can go on being the degenerate you are. The examples of this pathetic sin (and we have all committed this sin) can go on forever. “I was abused as a child and that is why I act the way I do.” “I was born a certain color or ethnicity, so therefore that is the reason I do what I do.” “I was born poor, so therefore that is my excuse for being a thief.” “I was born without a father, so that was the reason I did not care for my own children.” What!!! You see this especially with special interest groups, popular psychology, self-help trends and politically correct agendas.

            Anymore it has become something akin to the “boy that cried wolf.” The victimization excuse and the blame shifting cause is cried out so often now, that it has literally been turned into an abuse in-and-of-itself. As a matter of fact, it's become a religion in-and-of-itself. The abuse excuse, racism, sexism, etc., is claimed so often nowadays without any proof more often than not, that people are currently turning a deaf ear to it, because they are simply tired of it. People don’t know anymore who or what to believe, so the real victims often times go unnoticed and ignored. This is to the absolute degeneration of mankind. If mankind can be kept from taking any responsibility for their actions, thus maybe leading to confession and repentance, Satan is all the more happier.

            This sin, along with all others, began with Adam and has carried right on through to today. It is one of the greatest snares that Satan uses against mankind. To confess, is to agree with God that what you did was wrong and you are the one responsible for doing it. This leads to repentance and the consequences are good solid change in one’s character, thus going in accordance with God’s salvation. The terrible sin of this, is hate towards neighbor and worse, hate for God.

            But in the Bible, God is quite clear that there is no excuse or reason for sin. God holds each and everyone of us accountable for the choices that we make and the lives we lead. The Israelite's were under the extreme oppressive bondage of the Egyptians for 400 years when God rescued them. It must have been horrific for those people. But when God rescued them and then took them out into the desert for 40 years, He always held them accountable for their sins and wrong-doing. There is nowhere during those 40 years, where God gave the Israelites a built-in excuse in that “we sin and disobey God, because of the ill treatment and oppression we received from the Egyptians.”
