Bible Curriculum: Only A Tool

During the years I taught in Children’s Church and Sunday School, I used Bible curriculum to help structure my lessons and give me ideas to add activities to my classes. The curriculum can be a big help when it comes to planning and presenting Bible lessons.

Bible curriculum, also known as Bible teaching materials, are tools used to help people teach and learn from God’s word. Curriculum usually provides basic lesson plans, relevant scripture passages, scripture memory plans, Bible stories and specific age levels, games and other activities to help the students learn about God’s word. It can also provide demonstrations, ideas, object lessons and other activities to help teach the application and meaning of each principle in the Bible lesson. Curriculum also gives Christian workers premade guidelines and the tools that help them plan a series of related Bible lessons with a common theme. All Bible lessons should be focused on learning God’s word, the Holy Bible, and how to establish a daily walk with Jesus Christ.

Though curriculum can help teachers plan their lessons, without God’s presence in the teaching, curriculum is powerless. It is only a tool. Only God’s word, and the power of the Holy Spirit revealing that word, can provide the divine power needed to penetrate human hearts, plant God’s word in those hearts, and change people. God’s word is alive and powerful. The Bible tells us, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 KJV)

Christian workers, in their own physical strength and abilities are powerless when it comes to penetrating hearts, planting God’s word, and changing people and/or their lives. In John 15:5 KJV, Jesus says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.” So without God, our Bible teaching will not produce anything.

The Bible explains part of the work of the Holy Spirit saying, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13-14 KJV)

The Holy Spirit reveals God’s word to us, teaching us the message God has for each one of us. Through the word of God and the Holy Spirit’s revelation of that word, we learn about God, how we can receive the free gifts God has for us, and how to live our lives to bring glory and pleasure to God.

Though Bible curriculum is only a powerless tool, God is all powerful. He provides the life and power needed for the curriculum to work. God dwells in the hearts of His children, and from there uses His children as instruments through whom He works, changing and transforming hearts and lives, equipping His children for service, and spreading the word of God throughout the whole world.
