"All flesh is like the grass and its beauty like the flower of the grass; the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever," said the ancient Hebrew prophet Isaiah. (Chapter 40) He not only said it, he was instructed to "shout" it! It was and remains that important. He goes on to say that it's the breath of the Lord that causes this aging process. In other words it's the nearness of the Lord that causes us to grow older even to the point of the breaking down of our physical bodies. One has to be close to another to feel their breath, even to smell their breath. This fact of God's nearness causing us to age and causing our physical strength and beauty to diminish puts the whole process in a different "light" and a different context. We can trust God with it and in it. God is an intimate part of the inevitable changes in our bodies and minds, and lives. It still might cause dismay or alarm though if it were not balanced and contrasted by the statement of this truth: "but the word of the Lord endures forever." Though our energetic youth and prime of life is transitory and its pleasures fleeting, this very fact of their temporariness presses us into the lasting nature of the word of God and deepens our appreciation for it as our everlasting foundation. The eternal word of God has become (and is becoming more and more) our refuge. Sounds like something a psalmist would say!
