What We Carry for the Journey

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. Luke 9:1-6 NIV

Do you know that just as Christ gave the twelve disciples power and authority in sending them forth to preach, He also does the same for us? We unfortunately can hamper this given power and authority be carrying extra “baggage” with us. The Lord instructed the disciples as to what not to take with them. Do we carry what is false with us as we go on our journey for the Lord, to share the Good News? Is what we take to the world solely the word of God, or is it muddied with our own ideas and thoughts? Christ instructs us to empty ourselves of ourselves. We are to let the Holy Spirit inspire us as to what to say. Why do we worry? The Spirit will provide us with the words we are to say. He will lead us in all truth. It can be difficult, but we must be the vessel of Christ. All that fills us must be of Him. If all that is within us is of Christ, then we will abundantly share the Good News of our Savior. We share the Good News, and then we must let Christ take over. Remember it is about Christ, and glory for the Heavenly Father and Him. We are the loving and faithful vessels of Him. He uses us as He chooses, not as we choose.
