LIKE the Chinese philosopher riding backwards on a donkey, we live life forwards, but only understand it backwards.
I was a hippie, once. I naively believed in the possibility of a future utopia based on mankind’s inevitable evolution from hatred, greed and violence to an egalitarian
brotherhood and sisterhood.
Hippies, you see, had seen enough wars and genocide, enough of greed and lust, enough of handed-down twisted truths.
No one, we were convinced, was as concerned with fairness, tolerance and social justice as our generation. The reality was that we were self-seeking, self-interested, self-
absorbed and self-indulgent.
Little did we know that we were setting up our own little altars of falsehood.
We rationalised the throwing out of spirituality as a necessary price to pay for social revolution.
The blind spot for a lot of hippies was always God. Brute logic told us that seeing was believing, not the other way around. If you couldn’t prove it, it didn’t exist.
In the end, we became a little like G.K. Chesterton’s definition of a crazy person—a person who has lost everything except their reason.
The utopian dreams faded and we were left with nothing to hang our revolutionary hats on.
Christianity was not an alternative. It was just too difficult to rationalise that story and besides, the hippie creed was to “honour thy individuality’’. Jesus, with his
insistence on loving sacrifice, would get in the way.
In the end though, there was always something more than mere reason at work; a niggling thought that faith could be more than psychobabble or autosuggestion.
