Out of the Boat
What’s happening to me, I know I brought it upon myself. I could have stayed in my little tugboat, floating forever.
You see, I asked Him if I could leave my little boat. I’m tired of life this way, my Lord. Existing, but not living the abundant life that you died to give me, I implored.
Oh, it was boring in the vessel, but at least I was safe. The rock and rhythm of the seas lulled me into a place of complacency. I could sleep here. I could dream here. Humbly just waiting for Your return. Being kind to others, reading my bible and risking nothing further.
Then one day it was just not enough. The shields fell off my eyes and I saw you standing out there. You were there all along watching and patiently waiting for the moment for me to arise from my slumber. The still in my heart has ignited something; this need to serve my brothers and sisters in Christ, and those yet to be.
It was not a particular word, song, circumstance or ant one, upon which I could place and finger and say ‘Yes, one this day.’ I had an appointment. It was simply my time.
Then you bid me. Though You knew my insecurities and my weaknesses, especially my penchant for wandering and overthinking things. You are well aware that my emotions far outweigh my strength. But You allowed me to come anyway. This feeble creature calling out your name.
You even shed light all the way up to your feet so I would know the path. I boldly stood and took a step, leaving behind everything. Not having much, I gave it all away. The clothes on my back, the faith in my heart and a will for the King.
Here I am, Jesus. Out here on the ocean surface with You. Wow! What a view! The faraway lands sparkled like little toy villages and mountaintops in the distance round and topped with froth before my eyes. Valleys appear as tiny cups of dry spices, tossed by weeds highlighted by the moon.
My mind having no desire to look back, as Lots wife I surmised, there was nothing to go back to. My former days will be my most delightful days as I follow this crazy jolt in my heart. You alone are my Savior. I don’t look to be rescued by any man who have need of saving themselves. Only to be looked upon with love from the One and Only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
So when I slide, I’m not surprised. The storms are supposed to come. I knew it would not be easily, this Mecca to somewhere unknown. I left it up to the King to tell me where to go. When I hear the winds howl, I am not taken aback. I search for your Eyes in the darkness of night. Should I have prepared? And listened to the others? As I sink to my knees, I am suddenly frightened.
What was I thinking? I ask you with my eyes. It was not geography but someplace inside. My daughter, you were born for such a time as this. Each solder must spend time in training, praising and placing the Word on the tablets of his heart. It is time to gird up and fight the good fight. I have pierced your heart and watched it inflate, to carry you to this very place.
But Lord, if I fight, I will surely drown. My tears mix with the salt of the rain pouring down. I will never leave you or forsake you, as I’ve shed my blood for you as covenant both now and forever.
Not so, my Beloved, I hear you say, you will not drown. Allow the spiritual weapons inside to shine. They are all that you need. This battle is Mine. Allow the love lights of faith, humility, gentleness and most of all trust in Me and you’ll be sustained.
Soaked and cold, I shiver and shake. But, again I rise. Stronger this time. Battered and bruised but pleased with my need. That a Master so kind would still remain with me on the waters as I called on His Holy name.
Truly, what good am I to the Father, in this tattered state?
A solder can battle if he knows this one thing: His weakness that makes room for the King of all Kings, to fight in his honor on to victory.
