The wind blew! The trees shook! And all of Samantha’s allergies began to take note. She stepped out of her car and BAM! A cold gust of wind hit her right in the face. Great, she thought. I hope this doesn’t make me sick. Unfortunately, sick is exactly what Samantha became. That cold gust of wind settled into her bones and attacked all of her sinuses. She went to the doctor, but she just could not get better. She did not have time for this. She had to direct the Christmas choir, do the shopping and baking. She was determined to get well, but that would require rest and balancing those two things would be a challenge.
Samantha was not one to be still. She was always busy doing something, but this year her body just would not keep up with her heart’s desires. Too ill to work or do just about anything, she decided perhaps she should follow the doctor’s instructions and rest. This was no easy task. Resting was stressful because all she could do was think of all the things she could not do. Finally, realizing that rest was the only way to get her body back on track, she found the time to just be at peace.
Samantha thought, well, if I have to be down I’ll just watch some Christmas specials. This worked for a while, but soon she became bored of the television and DVD’s. She thought perhaps she could do just a little cleaning, but her body retaliated and down she went again. Oh, would she ever be well! Realizing that she was really quite ill, her daughter decided to take matters into her hands. She ordered Samantha to bed and began helping with all of the preparation. Soon Samantha was back on her feet and ready to go again.
There was a little social gathering Samantha was to attend. She was not quite 100 percent, but after all, she bought a dress and she was going. As soon as the family heard it they jumped into action. Her youngest daughter had come to visit and did up her makeup. A niece who had come into town was a beautician and she did up her hair. Samantha felt like a princess ready for the ball. She and her husband jumped in the old chariot and off they went. Dinner was delightful and the evening was light and fun. It was just the right recipe to give Samantha the push she needed. By the middle of the next week she was herself again.
The day finally approached. Christmas was coming and Christmas Eve was here. The tree was not up, but at least dinner was on track. Then the family arrived. It’s amazing how a child’s hug can melt your heart and make you feel like you are something special. The kids brought a tree and Samantha decorated it with the grandsons. They had a ball putting everything on the tree. Lights, garland, ornaments galore on a little four-foot tree. Not one branch was left out. It was not much, but it was theirs and it was as pretty as a picture to Samantha and those grandsons.
The day arrived. Samantha got up, stuck a ham in the crockpot, peeled some potatoes to save time and off to church they went. The Christmas musical went off without a hitch. The family arrived and joined in the service and Samantha smiled to herself. She thought about Mary, the mother of Jesus and how she had pondered the words given by the angel in her heart. She thought about what Mary may have been thinking as she carried baby Jesus. Did she worry about gifts or money? Not likely. Mary was probably concerned with how she was supposed to raise the Son of God. That’s not a job for the faint of heart. She wondered if Mary had any idea of how difficult the teen years would be or what sacrifices she would have to make for the baby. Then she thought of the sacrifice that baby made for her. She thought about how the King of Kings left heaven to come to earth so He could give His life for her. Suddenly, all of the things that had gone wrong seemed like a bad dream off in the distance. Perspective settled in and Samantha realized how very blessed she truly was. She was rich with family, she was rich in faith and she was rich with love in her heart for her God. Christmas would not be filled with gifts and activities. Christmas for Samantha would be filled with love that came down to sacrifice everything for her. The sacrifices she endured this season didn’t really seem like they were that big of a deal anymore. Samantha knew in her heart that in spite of all that happened that cold, windy, December that simple was good and it was all she needed. She had a wonderful, merry Christmas filled with family and love. It was a simple Christmas; the best kind of Christmas a person can have.
