During the holiday season it is easy to get caught up with the many family gatherings, commercial distractions via TV commercials, newspaper advertisements, shopping flurries and other activities surrounding Christmas and the New Year that we forget the importance of safety and preparedness.
Here below are some things to keep in mind when you venture out of town on a long distance drive. Most people will be using their vehicles so be sure to write down or print up this list of things to carry with you.
1. Spare tire- This should go without saying but you might be surprised to find out many people don't have a spare tire in their car or van. Before leaving home always check to see if you have a spare and that it is properly inflated with the right air pressure.
2. Car jack- A mid-priced hydraulic jack which is perhaps the strongest and safest to use.
3. Lug wrench
4. A quart of car oil- You never know if your car is leaking oil and when it might start to overheat and leave you stranded out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest gas station may be too far to drive to without damaging your engine.
5. A gallon of gas or at least a gas can. Don't depend on triple A. It'll take 20-30 minutes at least for them to reach you with some gasoline. Isn't it much better to be on your way in just a matter of minutes to your destination? This is especially true if you are running late.
6. Battery and tools like a screwdriver and wrench set to remove and install.
7. Back up bulbs for headlights.
8. A battery jumper that doesn't require another car to jump your car's battery. Having jumper cables is great but you need to stop somebody that is willing you help you. This isn't always possible. On second thought if you're a woman you might get a stranger to stop especially if you're fairly attractive. Such is life.
9. Small fire extinguisher- You never know when your car engine might overheat and catch fire. I was once traveling to northern California and noticed a car on fire. It was smoking badly so I pulled over but I can't remember if it was still burning or if a fireman had already been to the location to put out the fire. NOTE: Your car insurance may or may not cover your car's damage if it catches fire. Call your agent asap and ask.
10. First Aid Kit- In addition to carrying a first aid kit remember it does more good if you have been trained in giving first aid in case someone is injured. There are online courses or one or two day trainings available in a city near you.
NOTE: As a Christian who travels we must remember the story of the good Samaritan that Jesus told in Luke 10:30-37.
A priest and a Levite passed by a certain man who fell among thieves and was stripped and wounded left half dead. The good Samaritan, because he was prepared with the right attitude and skills, stopped to help this stranger. He bound up his wounds which means he had some knowledge of first aid and even had sufficient money (add some cash to this list) with him because the text says he "set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him." Behold how practical this man's moral conduct was. Finally, our Lord says "go and do thou likewise."
What's the lesson here?
Love your neighbor which is anybody. Don't show favortism to just your own kind but extend love, mercy and kindness to those unlike yourself.
Be prepared wherever you go and think safety. This requires an alert and cautious mindset wouldn't you agree?
