DETACH AND MOVE FORWARD!
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Genesis 12:1-4;
Sometimes it may be painful to detach, but separation, if and when necessary, is part of the price you must be prepared to pay for progress. If you’re not willing to detach when required, it may be totally impossible for you to move forward or fulfill the purpose of God for your life, you’ve got to learn the language of ‘Good Bye’ when required.
Looking at the story of Abraham, at the time God instructed him to get out from the land of Ur, it’s obvious the decision for him would be a tough one. Uprooting a man from among his families, friends, relatives and land of nativity where he had lived seventy-five years of his life, had a lot of serious implications. Before God’s instruction came to Abraham to detach and move out of Ur of the Chaldees, he had already been settled, having lived seventy-five years of his life in that land. For Abraham, moving out would mean breaking family ties, losing his investments, possessions, connections and relationships he had built over the years, to begin afresh in a land that he didn’t even know! At seventy-five, when Abraham was supposed to be preparing to retire and live the rest of his life in ease, God decided to unsettle him, to begin a journey of faith which would later turn out to be a pursuit of eternal purpose.
Abraham had his own plan, but God had a bigger plan for him. There was however no way he (Abraham) could step into the plan God had for him if he was unwilling to step out of Ur. We may ask ourselves if it was a must that Abraham move out of Ur before he could fulfill the purpose God had for him. I believe God would not have instructed him to move out if he could fulfill his purpose in that land. God’s desire was to raise a people of covenant - a living and eternal covenant, and His plan was to start with Abraham. If Abraham was still rooted in the way and manner of life of the Chaldeans who had no affinity with the Almighty God, it would be totally impossible for him to fit into the new thing that God wanted to begin.
There are certain reasons why people find it extremely difficult to detach when they’re being prompted. The first of these reasons is fear of the unknown. To enable Abraham detach as God commanded him, the first barrier he needed to conquer was fear of the unknown. Here was a seventy-five year old man who had already been settled in the land of his nativity with so much ties and bonds. Leaving the known for the unknown is certainly not an easy decision to make, but Abraham was able to detach because he learnt to trust God. You need to realize that there’s no way you can separate uncertainties from life! When God asks you to do anything or take any steps, it’s not unusual for your mind to be crowded with so many questions and uncertainties, but in the midst of these, you must be ready to trust Him enough to carry you through. It is so sad that so many people never realized their destiny nor became what the Almighty God destined them to be in life, because they’re not willing to detach and move when God prompted them. If you are the type that wants to wait to see God pave the way before you move, you’re bound to remain on the same spot; you may not fulfill your destiny. Faith is a key requirement for anyone that will walk with God, and until you’re ready to take that ‘leap in the dark’, you’re not ready to move.
Another reason many people find it difficult to detach when God prompts them is unwillingness to leave their comfort zones. When you keep holding on to what you have, there’s no way you can ever receive something new or bigger. No matter how comfortable you think you are in your current position or situation, there’s still something better you’re yet to see and experience, what you have now is certainly not the best you can have in life!
Be sensitive, when God gives a marching order, it is because He wants to begin something new in your life. You can’t keep holding on to the past and expect God to give you a new beginning. It was because Abraham obeyed God by detaching from his land of nativity that placed him at the centre of eternal relevance. Hear the voice of the LORD, you have dwelt long enough on this side of the mountain. Isaiah 51:2 says ‘Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him’. Look at the sequence and the order- Abraham was first called out – uprooted from where he was before God blessed and increased him. There’s a blessing that goes with detaching when God commands. As long as you remain married to sin, you cannot enter into fulfillment of God’s purpose for your life. Detach and move forward into righteousness!
Shalom!
