Do Christians Really Know God's Will?

Many Christians are troubled by the huge divide that is occurring in the ranks of those who identify themselves as belonging to “the household of faith”, and the division seems to be widening over the reactions and attitudes following Donald Trump’s election victory over Hillary Clinton in the recent USA presidential election.

It seems that the watchman is sending forth mixed, unclear signals to the world, and the Bible tells us that when this happens that people are endangered. Paul made the point quite well when he said, “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” (1 Corinthians 14:8)

Yes, the church has been divided for centuries, and there are hundreds of denominations, with each believing different things, and each having its own statement of faith, and different liturgies, and some even have different Bibles.

But all denominations, and all assemblies, and all Christians should belong to the one church; the Ecclesia, the church of Jesus Christ, for there is no other.

Political opinions, and different views on social and economic policy, should not obscure God’s will for the world. It is absolutely clear, and unequivocal, God’s will for each of us, and the Bible puts it like this:

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8)

The problem here, is that many of us have only a theoretical, almost philosophical appreciation of what this verse really means, without understanding the practical implications.

Take the first stipulation, but to do justly, as an example. What does it mean in practice?

It means that you as a Christian loves justice, not just for you, and your family and friends, but for everyone, and when you can, when the opportunity presents itself, you act justly to others. Equally, it means that when you see an injustice being perpetrated, and you can do something about it, then you do so without hesitation. It also means that when you see injustices occurring in society, you do not remain quiet, but rather speak out, or demonstrate, or whatever.

If you go back and look at the Civil Rights March on Washington, that took place in the USA in August 1963, and look at the pictures, and videos, you will see that many white and brown people were there, even though this was a black led, black organised event for human rights. Nobody should ever want justice to reign more than the Christian; regardless of who we are.

Donald Trump may, or may not, be a good person, and you are entitled to your opinion. He may, or may not, make a good president, and opinions will differ whatever he does. But these five things Christians CANNOT disagree with and pretend they know God’s will.

  1. Abortion is evil and offends God.

  2. Single sex marriage is evil and incurs God’s condemnation.

  3. Racism is evil and toxic and insults God.

  4. Homosexuality is a sin against both God and man.

  5. Pornography is evil.

If Donald Trump, as president, deals with these five evils, i.e., makes abortion illegal, overturns single sex marriage, deals effectively with racism, outlaws homosexuality and pornography, then, no matter what you may think, whether you approve of him or not, one thing will be crystal clear. He would have done God’s will.

Remember this. All true Christians say the Lord’s Prayer, because it’s the one prayer Jesus Christ taught his disciples, and it’s the one prayer most Christians know from memory. In this prayer, as recorded in Matthew chapter six, Jesus taught them to say, “...Thy will be done in earth...” (Matthew 6:10)

The litmus test of your standing with Jesus Christ is both wanting to see God’s will done here and now, and doing your best to practice doing God’s will day by day.

When you pray, pray for your leaders, and please don’t pray for them to fail, don’t pray for them to be a disaster, but pray that God may use them to do His will. Even today, it is still true that, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Can we all agree that our land needs God’s healing touch?

Enough said.
