Our Sin Is A Serious Matter

Even though "there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1), and "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (i John 1:9), our sin is still a big deal. It is too serious to simply say, "I have confesed it, and there is no condemnation, so I will move on as though nothing happened. 

     Let's remind ourselves that sin is sin. There are not different degrees of sins. Sin is going our own way and leaving God totally out of our lives. It is an attitude of rebellion, disobedience, and pride. It is having no regard for God's laws and ways. The first sin was manifested in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were deceived and went against what God had said. That rebellion, disobedience, pride, and living apart from God is still evidenced today in many ways, in one's thoughts, attitudes, and actions. 

     We must be continually reminded that Jesus bore a heavy load on the cross for each and every one of our sins. Our sins can still grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30-32). One of the things Jesus said on the cross was, "Father, why have you forsaken me?" Some bible scholars have said that the significance behind that question is that Jesus was bearing the weight of the past, present, and future sins of each and every person who has ever lived, living now, or will live! And God could not look upon sin. 

     So, we need to be cautious as believers in Christ to not casually confess our sins. True confession should be accompanied by heart felt repentance, with a true desire to change our ways and move in a different direction, in our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. We can claim God's power and grace to be cleansed from all unrighteousness, as stated in I John 1:9. 

     Thanks be to God. He is able to forgive, and put a new transformed heart into each person who calls upon Him for forgivesness and redemption.
