He walked alone, the dead amongst the living. Separated by law, cast off by custom, disregarded by society; his family would have buried empty coffin reckoning him as a dead man. Even other outcasts would give way as he called out, “Unclean, unclean” warning those ahead of his approach.
If you want to know what was his crime? Very simple, he was a leper. Smitten with a disdainful contagious disease under the powerful blow most would assume as punishment from God for a life of sin and evil, from a distance, he watched life go on. .Though the stench of rotting flesh would send forth the message to on-comers, the leper announced his presence, “Unclean, unclean.”
Luke 5:12:
And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold, a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
In neither the Greek nor Hebrew is the word leprosy a medical term but it does reference a whole range of conditions that would result in banishment from society. It may include what we would call Hansen’s disease, but some later Greek and Hebrew texts translate it as a terrible skin disease. Some manifestations would be ulcerations, lesions and skin cancers. Under this same descriptions could be pustular dermatitis, ring worm, acne and psoriasis.
Though some are not as physically dangerous or life threatening as others to a fickle society as many tends to be, the mental anguish can be as devastatingly heartbreaking.
I often say that the needs of mankind surpass scientific discovery and development, exceed the scope of nature and reach beyond the helping hands of human kindness. Yet, in the loving kindness, tender mercies and compassion of God we will see, no vexation of soul or body is not covered in His will to deliver from suffering.
The word “behold” is used to grab our attention—Look! “…a man full of leprosy…” His life is seeping away from his life form. He is dying.
The next phrase is very interesting in light of this meeting. “Who seeing Jesus”—
The word translated “seeing” goes beyond physical sight to perceiving what he sees! Jesus was the Word made flesh.
Psalm 107:20
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them, from their destructions.
Looking at the leper we see death. But, he perceiving Jesus sees a return to life. It is very evident in his next statement “…if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” It is not really a question but a realization—You can make me clean!
Jeremiah 32:27:
Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
His realization is Jesus can. By the grace and tender mercies I am here, your wonderful heart of love and compassion is here, this is our time! You can make me clean.
Luke 5:13:
And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
The word will means, a simple act of volition, an instinctive reflex. God’s natural response to the human condition is life. He wrote into our very immune system healing and recovery, resistance to attacks against the flesh.
“And he put forth his hand and touched him….” This word touched means to bring to one’s self or to embrace. Jesus hugged him! There was no doubt about God’s will to heal.and if there is a failure there He surpasses the scientific discovery and development, exceeds the scope of nature and reaches beyond the helping hands of human nature. God’s will is one of healing and deliverance and Jesus Christ proved it.
Our times tell us we need to “embrace our demons.” I will not! I have nothing in them and they have nothing in me. My Lord has embraced me and I will not let go of his words.
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them, from their destructions.
But there is a cruel enemy of God and mankind as a whole who works in hostility to the mind and body. He feeds the mind with fears of newly discovered threats of devastating diseases that incapacitate men and women and wreak havoc upon families. He endeavors to keep us from the stated will of God and ignorant of His tender mercies.
Beloved, we should not forget His benefits.
Psalm 103:1-4:
Bless the Lord , O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
The word “crowneth” means to “encircle”. God is loyal and faithful. Just as Jesus encircled the leper in his loving arms.
Four times the word “all” appears in these short verses. He heals all diseases. What all else does He do?
Matthew 4:23 and 24:
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto to him all sick people that were taken with divers [old English meaning “many”] diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy: and he healed them.
What manner of sickness? All! And what manner of disease? Again, all! We may discover a new sickness tomorrow and a new disease the next day but God’s power and deliverance covers all.
What is God’s will for your healing? Jesus, who always did his Father’s will, answered the leper, “I will.” Will you allow Him to fulfill His will in you?
When Moses questioned God in Exodus chapter 3, “…Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, the God of your Fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say unto me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them?
And I said unto Moses, I AM That I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I am sent me unto you.
Beloved, our God is I AM. That is, He is eternally present. He is a constant and His will is constant. God did not say, “I once was” or “I used to be” nor “Someday I hope to become.” He is I AM!
He is the almighty, all knowing, everywhere present God. He is not God in training and certainly not God who is slowly fading. He is I AM!
He is a present help in time of trouble, as the psalmist declared.
God told the children of Israel, “I am the Lord that healeth thee” more literally, I am the Lord thy physician.
It is really not accurate to say, ”What He once was He will always be because for God there is no “once was.”
I have heard people that they are not good enough to deserve healing. However, God is always good enough to give it. Healing is not based upon our goodness but His. God heals based on His goodness and the goodness of Jesus Christ. May I say, If God is truly that good and merciful wouldn’t that make you want to be a better man or a better woman to proclaim his wonderful name?
O my beloved brethren, He is ever present, ever forgiving and ever willing to perform his will for you. Come to him in the name of Jesus Christ that He may encircle you with His healing embrace.
He has called you to come out from dead among the living, come to him for He truly is our physician.
