DESPAIR IS OPTIONAL

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed but not despairing. NASB

I have yet to meet anyone that has not faced difficult times. Occasionally we face problems that seem to have no resolution. We may worry, fret, and stew looking for resolution. No matter what emotions may come to us, they do not conquer our problems.

King David faced many trials and tribulations but never despaired of God’s mercy. In Psalm 40, David “waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm”.

The Apostles faced difficult times. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair”. Saint Stephen was stoned to death as Paul looked on, but was God forgave Paul. Saint Peter was crucified but did not despair of his death.

Even our Lord and Savior faced despairing times. Knowing that He was about to be crucified, He cried out “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will”. Mark 14:36.

Although difficult times may come to us, to despair is optional. We can turn despair into hope through faith in our Creator. Jesus said in Matthew 28:20, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”. How can we be in despair when we have God on our side?

Lord, we thank you for always being in our corner of the boxing ring of life. Amen.
