Mom, she's acting SO SILLY!
And one child shakes his head while the other does indeed bob the waves of whatever is bumping around inside her. It is truly annoying, this silly toss-up of emotions making her act like a baby one minute and a goofy monster the next. It does call for some scathing remarks, the other children think, and they dish it out while rolling their eyes in disgust and calling Earth to Mama! in hopes that it will jolt me out of the peaceful inner moment I'm enjoying while I ignore the ruckus.
So life continues. Four children get highly annoyed at each other. One child slurps his soup, another nit-picks her way through life, and still another wants to be babied even though she's eight years old--- which makes the oldest, level headed child croak with distress.
Mom, she's so annoying!
And then you enter adult world. One lady passes another at church because something happened between us. The next minute the same lady is visibly excited over another lady, who is one of the most beautiful people I know, inside and out.
I wonder if she knows that the lady she had difficulty with is probably the one who needs her most? I wonder if she looks inside and wants to help out whatever makes her difficult to relate to, or if she will pass her by the rest of their years together because, well, it's just easier to do so and she doesn't want to get hurt again, or be plagued with a relationship that takes genuine effort.
Now Amalek came and fought with Israel........ When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands became heavy. (Exodus 17:8-12 NKJV)
You would think the same God who was causing Israel to win would also strengthen Moses' hands. Why would a miracle working God Who was already causing the supernatural to happen need two men holding Moses' hands?
They rallied around him. They set a rock under him for a seat, and held his hands til the sun went down. Moses, the mighty man of God who worked miracles all the time, and was currently right in the center of one, needed help. God wanted his hands up, but he couldn't do it alone. And his friends, rather than scold him for his lack, lifted his hands for him.
I sat the kids down for worship and prayer time before school this morning, and brought up this mercy thing. You know, kids, when you get so annoyed with mama or daddy or each other, and someone is cranky, it's so easy to roll our eyes and scold whoever is acting out of line. What if, instead, we try to uncover what the real issue is, and help out with the real problem?
What if, instead of being upset that someone is grouchy, we realize they must be having a difficult day and try to help each other instead?
I could see it click with the kids. You know, they all like to be treated that way, but it's so hard to do it with each other in the heat of annoyance. I loved watching this Moses story settle in their hearts and bring about a deeper 'knowing' of love, and how to be Jesus to people.
We can minister to others instead of hurt them more. We can dispel the frustration of the day instead of make it worse. We can see hearts soften, lives change, and relationships heal. We can really be Jesus' hands and feet because He said that peace makers are blessed and they will inherit the kingdom of God.
What if, on the streets, in the church, at home, in the grocery store, we all lived this way? What if??
