Faith
Rick and Mari had picked Ashlyn and Emmy up from school and gone to visit different stores to see which ones had the equipment Rick would need to build more lemonade-making machines. They were disappointed to find that every single store they visited was sold out. Finally, they felt God speaking to their hearts to go the lab Rick and Mari used to work in. They figured it couldn't hurt. Even though Joe fired them because they shared their faith, he wasn't a stingy man. They trusted he would be generous. They drove to the lab and parked their car in the parking structure. Rick and Mari held their daughters' hands as they walked through the parking structure. It was rush hour, so a lot of cars were sure to start going through the parking structure.
Mari looked at her watch. "It's after five," she told Rick. "The lab might be closed now."
"Sometimes Joe stays late, honey," Rick said. "We'll just see if he's there and, if not, try in the morning."
"RICK!" Mari suddenly screamed, her face pale as she pointed to the ground.
"What's wrong?" Rick asked, following her gaze. To his horror he saw that she was pointing at their old boss, who was lying on the ground, unconscious and badly bleeding from multiple knife wounds! "Joe!" he shouted. He, Mari, and the girls headed over to him, and Rick knelt down to examine him. The thought of his former boss, whom he had admired for so many years, being killed scared him so much that he started to sweat hard. He checked Joe's chest and his wrist and found he had a pulse and was breathing. "Call 9-1-1!" he shouted to Mari. Mari called 9-1-1, frantic and crying. She told them there was a man who was unconscious from stab wounds yet still breathing and described where they were. Very soon an ambulsnce came and picked up Joe, and Rick, Mari, and their daughters rode in the ambulance, too.
"Daddy, why did Mr. Dollar get hurt?" Ashlyn asked. She was crying.
Rick hugged her and said, "I don't know, honey. I don't know." He was crying, too.
"We should pray for him," Mari sobbed as she was holding her own crying child close.
Rick, Mari, Emmy, and Ashlyn all bowed their heads, and Rick led them in prayer. "Jesus, please heal Joe. Don't let him die. If he died now, we know that, because he is not saved, the suffering he will experience after death is even greater than what he's experiencing now. We love You and ask all of these things in Your name. Amen."
At the hospital they waited for hours for news about Joe, but no one could really give them any information. His condition hadn't changed, but they didn't know if he would heal or not. Everyone wanted to go in and sit with him, so Rick asked how many people were allowed in his room at a time. "No more than two," the nurse replied.
Joe was like a second father to Rick, so Rick asked if he could go in first and take Ashlyn in for a little while. He wouldn't keep her in there too long. The nurse agreed it was all right.
Rick sat on the only chair that was in the hospital room, which was right next to the bed. He took Ashlyn onto his lap, then leaned over and looked at his unconscious boss. "Please, God," he whispered, "please spare his life and save his soul." Emotionally exhausted and overcome by sleep, he leaned his head back on the chair and closed his eyes.
Meanwhile, Joe saw his spirit leave his body, and then he saw himself surrounded by an endless sea of flames that terrified him to death! He heard a gentle Voice whisper, "Joe, you don't have to experience this..." Just then, his spirit returned to his body, and he regained consciousness.
