Christian Living
I grew up in San Diego where my dad pastored a church. While in college attending San Diego State University I was going to a church in the North Park area of the city. One night a friend invited me to attend a concert at a church called Scott Memorial. Because I was a music major, I was initially attracted to the music program. However, after being involved in several churches throughout my life, aside from the music, something stood out about this church. It made me want to go back. I continued going and eventually became a member.
Over time I began to see an excitement and relevancy to the Christian life that I had not seen in other churches. The pastor talked a lot about the Second Coming of Jesus. That interested me because two years earlier I had heard Hal Lindsey speak at a Campus Crusade for Christ conference. The pastor's name was Tim LaHaye. One time a person by the name of John Morris spoke in an evening service about his experience on Mt. Ararat looking for Noah's ark. This church was totally changing my spiritual life.
Tim LaHaye was a very humble man who dreamed big. While I was at his church I saw the founding of what was then called Christian Heritage College. I witnessed the formation of an entire Christian school system. During this time the Institute for Creation Research was also formed. This was all new to me, to see people doing great things for God's glory. Up until that time my Christian life consisted of just going to church, singing songs, listening to the choir, and soaking up messages which I would not remember the next day.
Probably the thing that caught my attention the most about Tim LaHaye's teaching was that he said, in reference to biblical interpretation, that "if the sense of scripture makes plain sense, then seek no other sense." This was the first time I had ever heard that. He was short in stature, but stood tall in taking the Bible literally. Alongside Hal Lindsey, Dr. LaHaye was responsible for me becoming excited about prophecy.
Tim LaHaye not only left his mark on the spiritual climate of San Diego, but I would have to say that he was one of the most significant people in my life. He was one of the pillars of the faith and prophecy that God gave me the wonderful privilege of knowing, and sitting under his teaching. I remember the time when he invited the college/career class over to his home after an evening service, not knowing at the time the spiritual giant he would become in our culture. I will long remember him in my thoughts, as he is now with his Lord and Savior, whom he loved so much.
