The third chapter of Acts can easily be divided into two sections: A miracle healing (verses 1-10), and Peter's second sermon (12-26). God worked through Peter to heal a lame man at the entrance to the Temple. One day as Peter and John were approaching the man was begging for alms, as he did every day, expecting to be given something. Instead, verse 6 records that Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene-walk!" The man was instantly healed (verses 7-8).

     Now, let's back up a moment. Verse 4 tells us, "And Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze upon him and said, 'Look at us!'" This phrase, "fixed his gaze" occurs several other times in the book. Is there a significance in this? In researching, the only thing I came up with was the concept of intensely focusing upon someone in need with the intention of ministering to them in word or deed. 

     Now, let's continue beginning in verses 9-10. "All the people saw him walking and praising God...and they were filled with wonder and amazement..." The phrase, "all the people," is mentioned again in verse 11. This supernatural healing was having a positive effect on those gathered.

     Peter's response is given beginning in verse 12, to the end of the chapter. The key points are:

     1. The death and resurrection (verses 13-15).
     2. Again, as in the previous chapter, Peter emphasizes the fact that they were witnesses to the resurrection (verse 15).
     3. "It is on the basis of faith...in the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know.." (verse 16).
     4. Repentance (verse 19). This is the second time the word is used. The first was in 2:38. Turning to God is not based upon an emotion. It is a conscious decision to go in a different direction. 
     5. All of these above 4 points refer to Jesus, but Luke writes in verse 14 that they "disowned  the Holy and Righteous One..."

     Verses 21-26 talk about the prediction of Christ "about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time" (verse 21). This is further emphasized in verse 24. 

     This short chapter closes by saying that "God raised up His Servant, and sent Him to bless you by turning everyone of you from your wicked ways"

     Are you beginning to see how God worked in the Book of Acts. Bold and supernatural things were done, through the power of the Holy Spirit, which drew large crowds of people. This then gave the apostles the opportunity to preach the gospel in a positive and receptive environment. What are some ways that your local church could apply this concept in reaching non-believers?
