UNDERSTANDING THE BOOK OF REVELATION
After I wrote my first edition on Revelation, some friends expressed concern that it was too hard to understand. I decided to write this brief summary to avoid any confusion. To receive the blessing that this book promises, I want to help by giving you some important information. We will begin by giving some background. When Jesus was on earth He told His disciples that some dayin the future He would return. When He returns, two events would happen:
1. He would destroy all the enemies that caused His followersproblems.
2. He would return and take His faithful followers home with Him to Heaven.
In Matthew chapter 24, (called the Olivet Discourse) we find the details .In this chapter Jesus describes many events that will happen before He returns. Men will war with each other; people will reject truth and follow false teachers and a great disinterest and falling away from God will occur. Shortly after, a time of Great trial will take place and later Jesus will return. To obtain clearer understanding of this event, read Matthew 24 in a modern translation.
John, the only Apostle of Christ who did not suffer a martyr’sdeath wrote the book of Revelation. Revelation gives the final message of that contained in Matthew 24. It begins by addressing seven churches in seven particular locations. Christ addresses these churches as having seven unique problems that need encouragement and correction. The problems that He addresses will be present in the
churches before His return.
In Revelation chapter nineteen, Christ comes prepared to receive His perfected bride (The church). In Revelation Chapter 2 and 3, the church is in an unprepared state. In chapters 4-18 we see events happening which will bring this church to maturity. Like Gold melted and the impurities removed, so is the purifying that takes place in His church. Finally we see the Bride adorned and ready for the coming of the bridegroom in Chapter 19. In Chapter 21 the marriage has taken place and in Chapter 22 we see the church at home at last enjoying the presence of God forever.
The word Revelation Means “to remove the covering”. That iswhat God has done in giving us this wonderful book.
In Revelation chapter one verse three God begins by giving this promise. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep those things which are written in it; for the time isnear”
