Noah was a survivor. He had to be. Growing up in the unforgiving climate of a rural village in Mozambique, it was every man, woman and child for himself. Metuchira is situated just off the EN6 main link between Beira and Zimbabwe. It might as well be miles from anywhere, at least, as far as Noah was concerned.
He was wheelchair bound in a society that strictly observes disability as ‘down there somewhere’ on the social ladder. There is no sensitivity to disability or extra consideration shown, and for Noah it was a lonely place to be. He couldn’t run around in his bare feet like the others, indeed mobility was difficult at the best of times. He was grateful for the wheelchair he did have, but its designer was never going to win any awards for brilliant engineering. It had two small front wheels that made movement difficult and the larger wheels that he could push along were bereft of tyres. In short, Noah needed a new wheelchair. But how in the world was that ever going to happen in a dirt poor rural village with minimal contact with the outside world? How would God ever answer Noah’s prayer for a new wheelchair?
The Mozambique team had been given a Sunday morning service to report back on their trip to the Journey Church in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Each team member was asked to share something of what had impacted them on the trip. They had bought a thousand Bibles in Portuguese, Shona and Senna through fundraising and had been over to distribute them to the waiting churches and pastors, most of whom had never held a Bible in their hands. Apart from the Bibles, there were African commentaries, food, sweets, footballs and Bible stories to share with the children.
Sammy was part of the ministry team but also floated about and got involved with the children’s work. On the visit to Metuchira, he was outside and couldn’t help but notice Noah. Isolated by his being different from the other kids, he sat on the periphery, looking on. Sammy intentionally went over to him and touched his arm. Human touch is a language that crosses any barrier. He looked into Noah’s eyes and although he couldn’t speak to him, the Lord made it clear to Sammy that this boy needed help. He resolved in his heart that he would somehow get this young man a new wheelchair. Noah had impacted Sammy. The Lord had begun to answer prayer.
As Sammy finished his report, Gary, the pastor, and team leader, got up to speak to the congregation. ‘Sammy doesn’t know this, but just this week I was speaking to a man from Northern Ireland who has a ministry in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. He builds and provides wheelchairs. I told him about Noah and he asked for a photograph. As soon as he received it, he concluded that Noah needed a wheelchair. He asked for the exact location of the village and the next time he was up in Beira, he would personally deliver it.’
Next up was Karen, who said she was emotional and we would understand why as her story unfolded. Karen had been part of the children’s team. She too, along with the others on the team, had noticed Noah and tried to include him in the games. She threw a Frisbee to him and she reported that the delight in his face to be included was priceless. Noah had touched Karen’s heart too. She also told how when she and Stephen had held his hands he burst out crying, overcome with emotion and didn’t want to let go.
How does God answer prayer for a disabled boy in a remote village in Africa? Just like that! He says, ‘I’ve got it covered. You think everyone has forgotten you but I am going to send a team of people from thousands of miles away to meet you. Then when they get back I am going to get them to share your story with hundreds of other people. Oh yes, and I happen to have someone who will see all this and bring you a new wheelchair.’ The very hairs on our head are numbered. Our God cares. Never doubt it.
