"... so that you may have great endurance and patience ... " Colossians 1:11
Why do we need great endurance and patience? It's not like we live in a country that currently persecutes people for their Christian faith. We may have our fair share of floods and fires but generally we don't endure hardships because of civil war.
Yet we still need great endurance and patience because we are in a battle - a spiritual battle. Ephesians 6:12 tells us, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." It is a subtle battle and we are often deceived into thinking it's not real. However our forefathers knew the battle was real and wrote hymns with a decidedly military flavor like "Onward Christian Soldier".
The battle is fiercest when we are weary. We surrender to low grade entertainment filling our minds with unworthy thoughts and filling out bodies with comfort food or drink. We succumb to our lack of motivation and don't venture to places where our lifestyle choices will be challenged. Hebrews 2:1 warns us against drifting away which is easy to do at such times.
Not only is there a battle but also promised victory through Jesus. Let's pray like Paul, that we will be "strengthened with all power according to his glorious might" (Colossians 1:11) that we may stand against the tricks and distractions of the devil.
