Valentine’s Day. The day of love. Millions of cards will be passed out in schoolyards. Little boys secretly hoping the little girl will answer the “Will you be my Valentine?” card with a smile and a “YES”! Big balloons with “I Love You” written on them float in stores, their strings or ribbons hanging down face high beckoning you to “pick me”. Heart shaped candy, chocolate covered treats, and flowers of all colors. February 13. Men crammed shoulder to shoulder in the card aisle, wondering why there is a “Happy Birthday Mom” card stuck in the Valentine section. Young men and women begin their life together, full of hopes and dreams. Yep. Love is in the air. You can feel it, hear it, and see it. It’s everywhere!

But where did love come from? How did you know when she was the one? What caused you to love that crying, wrinkled, toothless (yes, I’m speaking of a newborn here) baby in your arms? Why, for goodness sake, do we keep feeding, clothing, sheltering, and caring for those kids that think we’re so dumb? Who invented this thing that has inspired so many songs and poems, kept one fellow(me) out in the icy rain with his future father-in-law for over an hour while trying to get his nerve up to ask his daughter on a date, sent men and women off to war to never return, and yet has never been truly defined by man?

Let’s consider I John 4:16. God is love. God not only created love, God is love. God created man and woman and gave them the ability to love. We can choose to love. We can choose not to love. We can choose when to love, how to love, who to love. The choice is ours. God instructs us on all of these choices, but ultimately leaves the decision to us. We decide if someone is worthy of our love. If they lose our love. In God’s all encompassing love, He gave us the choice. He also gave us the example.

Do you want to experience true love? Look to Jesus. Have you loved someone that didn’t love you back? Did you give your love to someone and they betrayed your trust? God will never betray you. He will never let you down. He will never, not love you. He can never undo Who He is. God is love.
