Fight From Your Knees
I like to wrestle with my kids. The oldest has gotten to the point that she’s pretty good. My boy needs some work, but he’s getting there. The next two are seven and four. I have to get down on the floor and even the odds a little bit. Otherwise they would just be hitting me in the leg. They still like to get on my back, because they move quicker than I do in that position. They still lose, but they are quicker.
In this position, I am considered weaker than they because I’m only using half my body to fight back. The get to use all their moves and all their muscles to try and defeat me. One of these days, they just might. It’s not going to be for a while, so I tend not to worry.
Being on your knees could mean a lot of things. It could be that you are trying to limit your movements so as to even the odds. It could mean that you are surrendering to the opposition. It could be that you just have given up and fall down from exhaustion. Maybe you’re just looking for your contacts.
There is one other possibility. Maybe you are there to pray. It’s not unheard of to pray from your knees. I know there are those that pray while sitting, and still others that pray while standing. But for me there is nothing like kneeling before God. Of all the positions that I could be in, this one puts the whole thing into perspective.
When I kneel, I believe that I am showing God the most respect. Men have kneeled before kings all throughout history. When you pray, are coming into the presence of God. Why would you not show Him the same respect that you would an earthly king? He is the creator of all things. If that were all He did, He would be deserving that type of respect.
Now, we all know that we have an adversary in the devil. Anybody that thinks this guy is your buddy has not been following along with the rest of the class and will stay after school for detention. The devil is seeking you out on a daily basis trying to destroy you. He wants your life to be as meaningless as it can be. If at all possible, he wants you to believe that you are never going to reach Heaven. That way, he can have more company with him when he gets delivered to the lake of fire.
The devil is crafty. He’s been fooling people for thousands of years. Believe me, he’s gotten good at it. He knows all the tricks that there are. He invented them. To him, you are easy prey. He could mess you up in two seconds and not break a sweat. You are no match for his evil thinking.
A little known fact about me. I test my IQ points every so often just to make sure that I still have some. I like taking tests. Weird, I know. The last time I tested was three months ago. I got a 147. I’m slipping. I’m used to being much higher. But even with the brain that God gave me, I am no match for the tricks that the devil has in store for me. He has me beat on all sides. The archangel Michael dares not confront the devil alone, so I guess that means I’m going to need some help.
If this is true, and it is or I wouldn’t be telling you, then what hope of defeating this foe do we possess? There is only one, and He is the One. He is the hope of all humanity. You want to beat the devil and send him running for the pit, there is but one name under Heaven that will work.
Jesus Christ has beaten the devil on every front. He is still beating him. It happens everyday. Twenty-four hours a day, people around the world call on Jesus in their time of prayer. They ask for strength. They ask for guidance. They ask for power that only comes from above. This is the only way to conquer the enemy.
Now that we have that straight, let’s look at some reasons that I like the symbolism of kneeling in prayer. The kneeling position is supposedly weaker. Let’s turn that around a bit. What I feel I’m doing is admitting that I am weaker than God and that I need his help to win the war. God has all the power and strength that I would ever need to fight and win against the devil. I would be a fool to deny myself that kind of advantage.
Am I trying to limit my movements? You bet I am. The less I move and the more that God moves in me the better. If I try to handle this on my own, I’m going to get myself into trouble. I’ll try to do it with just my strength and I’ll lose terribly. But with me on my knees and God doing the moving, the devil has nowhere to run. He’s not going to outsmart God. God wants me to win, and He wants to help me do it.
Am I surrendering to the opposition? Not in this lifetime. Oh, I’m surrendering all right, but I’m surrendering to God and His will for what He wants me to do today. The devil wants me, so that he can use me for his purposes. By submitting to God, I let God tell the devil that I’m occupied for the day and I won’t be back anytime soon.
Let’s say for arguments sake that I have been fighting with just my strength and wits. I guarantee I’m getting whipped. I’m probably banging my proverbial head into the wall trying to get through, and I’m not going anywhere. That is exhausting. If I wasn’t smart enough to hit my knees before, then now is a great time to get on them. Anytime is a great time to pray. Just don’t close your eyes while driving.
Prayer is the best weapon you have to fight the devil anytime, anywhere. He can be beaten. You just need a little help. While your on your knees later, ask God where that contact might be hiding.
