A NEED GREATER THAN FOOD AND WATER, PART III
Hurt by his relationship with Bridget ending, Paul found it hard to concentrate on anything else. He couldn't concentrate on his schoolwork, and his grades began to slip. He also had difficulty staying focused when running on the track. His teachers and coach became very concerned about him and told him what would happen if he didn't regain his focus. He would be in danger of flunking out of school, and he would lose his track scholarship to Princeton. Paul knew that this was all true, but he just couldn't think about anything except Bridget. He was scared to tell his parents about his grades and what his coach had said for fear that they would get angry with him. He became more and more depressed and hardly ate or slept. His parents never took the time to talk with him about his problems. All they would say was, "Paul, if you don't eat and get lots of rest, you will never be the star athlete you need to be to get a scholarship to Princeton. Whatever's wrong, you have to understand that life isn't easy, and you need to buck up. If it's Bridget, forget her. You'll find someone else."
Paul's academic performance and performance on the track team continued to deteriorate, and one evening his parents got calls from his teachers and his coach, saying they wanted to discuss the problem. They told Samuel and Mallory that they were concerned that, because Paul's grades and standing on the track team were suffering so badly, he might not be able to get into Princeton. Samuel and Mallory were furious. They stormed up to the bathroom, where Paul was in his pajamas and bathrobe, getting for bed. He had just finished brushing his teeth, and now he had mouthwash in his mouth. Samuel began talking: "Paul, your mother and I are very upset and disappointed in your performance at school. We just got off the phone with your teachers and coach."
Paul was not in the mood to listen to a lecture. He threw back his head and kept gargling loudly. Mallory tried to talk above his gargling: "Paul, you know how we feel about this. You're not going to get into Princeton if you keep going the way you are. We told you that you had to put your problems behind you and move on with your life. Your future depends on it!" Paul continued to gargle loudly, then finally spit out the mouthwash. "Whatever, Mom. Whatever, Dad. I'm really tired and don't really want to talk. I just want to go to bed and go to sleep. Good night." He went into his room, then sat down on his bed with his head in his hands and sighed heavily. Things were really out of control in his life now. He lost the girl he loved, his entire school performance was suffering because of it, and instead of compassion and understanding from his parents, he had a mom and dad who were too busy with work and only knew how to lecture and scold him. Paul felt like he had had it with life. He had received Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was four, and he knew that because of that he would get into Heaven, a place with no more troubles or sorrow. Paul thought and thought. He decided he would do something to get there now...
