“And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” – Mark 4:37-38 NKJV

Picture this scenario: After a long day of ministration on a boat, Jesus with His disciples (on the same boat) embarked on a journey to the other side of the sea. Jesus seizes the opportunity to take a nap on the cruise. No sooner He dozes off, a huge storm emerges out of nowhere, tossing the boat and filling it with water. Here’s the astonishing part. Jesus was still asleep peacefully! Most people would hardly find sleep through the sound of dripping water from a tap that isn’t properly stopped! The disciples had to wake Him up in desperation. He then stands up, and speaking forth peace, He calms the storm.

The bible likens peace as a river (Isaiah 66:12) that flows from within. To manifest such outward peace, there first must be an infinite reservoir. Such was demonstrated by Jesus in the scripture above - the peace of God that transcends all human understanding and guides the heart and mind (Philippians 4:7). The world tends to ascribe peace to current events, happenings and status quo, but the peace God gives is different. It comes from within. “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” – John 14:27 (NKJV)

The peace the world offers is feeble and dependent on such features as security, finance, political power; all of which are irrepressible and dispensable. This is why the world today has not been able to arrive at a compromise to world peace. God’s peace is infinite - even in the midst of troubles and tribulation, it never depletes or wavers. In addition to His promise of deliverance from tough times, He assures us of His presence through it all. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you…” – Isaiah 43:2.

Christ Himself is our way of peace (Ephesians 2:14). When we look to Him in times of trouble, He abides with us and leads us safely to redemption (Psalm 23:4; Matthew 14:30-32) and gives us peace that surpasses all understanding.
“And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” – Philippians 4:7 (AMP)
