There are so many lessons to learn from the book (and life) of Job, the righteous. God was proud of this man's righteousness inspie of his being in comfort in real sense of it. However, Satan made sure that he lost all that he had. One interesting and faith building statement about Job story is,
"In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly." Job 1:22; 2:10.
Lesson Two.
Great pain coupled with loss of every living thing and means of living seems unbearable. No one prays for such negative experience but it happens to man.
When accusations started to pour down like rain from his friends, Job was on the defensive. In his feeble attempts to do this, he began recounting his past good deeds. He declared his innocence and righteousness. However his defence made the attack more fierce.
Job was left with nothing but to roll out his catalog of righteous acts. He claimed to be righteous and proclaimed it. This also provoked his friends more. He went ahead to demand a "debate" with the Lord to clear certain issues. He said,
"Oh thar one would hear me! Behold my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me." Job 30:35.
Finally, when he encountered God, he saw his wretchedness he said,
"Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee?
I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
Once I have spoken; but I will not answer; year, twice; but I will proceed no further." Job 40:4-5.
The lesson to draw here is that no one in the flesh can claim to be so righteous as to invite the Almighty God to a debate. Man's righteousness is compared with "filthy rags".
If not for the grace of God, Job's friends with their sharp and wounding words could push Job into saying extremely sinful things.
During the time of Prophet Isaiah, he made it known to all and sundry his own state when he saw the holiness of God;
"Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the king, the Lord of hosts." Isaiah 6:5.
No man in the flesh will be glorified. Righteousness of man is compared with filthy rags. No one can attain perfect righteousness without the Holy Spirit. Apostle Paul lamented,
"For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
... O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." Romans 7:19, 24-25.
Do you know that during Job's travails he desired the assurance that Paul had? He declared,
"For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand on us both." Job 9:32-33.
Now, if Job could compile a list of his righteous acts and on his own again, desire a Daysman between him and God; and Apostle Paul could thank God through Jesus Christ, the Daysman, do you think your righteous acts can sustain you?
Isaiah records,
"But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away." Isaiah 64:6.
You must learn, therefore, to be good and do good always with the help of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who is on duty now. He alone knows the heart of the Father and can reveal it to you so you can please Him alone. Never rely on your own flesh-based righteousness.
Stay blessed and rapturable, the Lord is coming soon!
