A House for Prayer

‘And He taught, and said to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations”’[Luke 11:17a RSV]
The Apostle Paul shared to the Corinthians that we are God’s temple when he said, ‘Do you not know that you are Gods temple and that God’s Spirit dwells within you? [1 Corinthians 3:16]

On 1st July, 1857, a quiet and zealous business man named Jeremiah Lanphier took up an appointment as a City Missionary in down-town New York. He distributed a handbill
which read in part:

HOW OFTEN SHALL I PRAY?
‘As often as the language of prayer is in my heart; as often as I see my need of help; as often as I feel the power of temptation; as often as I am made sensible of any spiritual declension or feel the aggression of a worldly spirit.’ A day Prayer Meeting is held every Wednesday, from 12 to 1 o'clock, in the Consistory building in the rear of the North Dutch Church, corner of Fulton and William Streets. Intended to give merchants, mechanics, clerks, strangers, and business men generally an opportunity to stop and call upon God amid the perplexities incident to their respective avocations.’
Within six months, ten thousand business men were gathering daily for prayer in New York, and within two years, a million converts were added to the American churches. It was of such an order to make the whole nation curious.
Jeremiah Lanphier through Spiritual prompting became a ‘House for Prayer’ to inspire our Nation. Today I invite you all to take the challenge; in your own community become ‘a house of prayer’ for another ‘Great Awakening’ across America.
