Illness
There are many people that do not understand my insistence on working at home or somewhere. I want to be perfectly clear about this. I do not believe that everyone should or can work for that matter. There are many people that are unable to work anywhere and I firmly believe that society should be understanding and supportive of the life that they are forced to live.
My statement is about me personally. My back is shot. One of Tennessee’s best surgeons tried to repair it. But it is what it is. I have spent two periods of my life confined to a wheelchair. I have an immune system that would confuse Harvard’s best. I have had cancer and several episodes that just left everyone stretching their head.
For seven years, I was a counselor. I loved it. But I got sick of it. I mean really sick of it and sick from it. I am highly allergic to four things: eggs, penicillin, marriage and drama. Being a crisis counselor was constant exposure to the latter of the four. But I will admit that with modern technology, I was blessed to be able to work from my wheelchair, bed or anywhere that I was comfortable. I was at home almost every hour and only lost that job because I was unable to get online to work three nights in a row.
We have all heard the saying “When one door closes, another opens.” That was the case. For almost ten years, I have written and submitted my work. Some have been published, some awarded and many rejected. Losing my job as a counselor, being sick AGAIN and locking myself away from the world gave me time to really write. The third article submitted brought the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have five books releasing this year, articles published weekly (that I get paid for) and a zoo in my house to keep me company.
The thing with me is that it is my body that has the illness. My brain is just fine. My body has limitation. My brain doesn’t. But when I say that I must do something….I do. I really do. Because if I don’t stay busy I will become depressed, forgetful, out in space, irritable etc. So trust me when I say that I have to do SOMETHING! And that brings me to my final point.
I must work. I have to stay busy. If I don’t my illness only get worse because the emotional/mental (whichever term is less offensive these days) will be added to the physical problems. I become one very sick and unhappy woman. I am in no way unique about that. Regardless of what a person’s disability is, give them something to do. Let them do whatever they are able to safely do. They need to feel like a person. They matter. Let them know. And if at any time you begin to doubt that a disabled person matters, ask yourself if you are truly a Christian. Because if you are, then a disabled person has already affected your life. Paul was crippled.
