Luke 12:

15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness,[b] for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”


Greetings my Beloved Brothers and Sisters,

The above scripture text is from the sub-title. "The Parable of the Rich Fool". This parable is where Jesus warns a rich young man to beware of covetousness. Covetousness is defined as inordinately or wrongly desirous of wealth or possessions; greedy. The young man was asking Jesus to intervene and make his brother divide an inheritance with him. This appeared to be an innocence and reasonable request however; Jesus responded, " Man, who made me judge or an arbitrator over you? " This was not the response he nor I was expecting but that is just like the Lord.

Have you ever asked the Lord for something and you received an unexpected response? The scriptures declares," For My thoughts are not your thoughts,Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8). It is not that Jesus is not capable of judging the situation but that is not his purpose, what he did discern was the root cause of the dispute. And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness,[b] for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” In essence he warns them both about being greedy, and that life is not about how much stuff you possess.

Some wrongly think that it is only the rich that have a problem with covetousness however; many poor people have succumb to covetousness. Have you ever heard of the crabs in the bucket syndrome? It is simply this, when a person or persons are so covetous or greedy that when they see increase in anyone's life they will begin to sabotage their success and pull them back down because they don't want to see you or I make more progress in our lives than them that is why it is call the crabs in the bucket syndrome because that is exactly what crabs in a bucket do. Paul said," Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain[c] we can carry nothing out."(1 Timothy 6:7-8).

Therefore our focus should be godliness with contentment which Paul called "Great Gain". The scripture declares," seek ye first the Kingdom of God , and His righteousness and all these other things shall be added." There is nothing wrong with having things and success as long as things and success do not have you. In other words we make money and money does not make us! 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.( 1 Timothy 6:10).
