Heredity: It’s Importance In Child Development
© 2015
by
Stephen A. Peterson
In a previous article: “Environment: Its Importance In Child Development”, the importance of a child’s environment was emphasized to their development. Heredity is the other important variable.
Heredity sets limits beyond which a child cannot go. The notion a person may become anything he or she wishes to be just so long as that person is willing to work hard, long for whatever it is and faithfully pursues it without yielding has no truth to this saying. A child born with certain brain dysfunction that affect their intelligence causing her or him low intellectual performance cannot hope to achieve at the top of their academic class with respect to dealing with abstract skills. This same child may, on the other hand, may be endowed with physical skills to be and outstanding athlete, artist, or automobile mechanic.
Similarly: If a child lacks the ability to shoot a basketball or understand the formula and application of simple harmonic motion, no amount of training or extra work, the best trainer or instructor, will make her/him an extraordinary athlete or academian. At best the child will develop to become an ordinary player or barely survive additional physics classes. Nothing the child does will enable her/him to go beyond their limits.
Heredity or environment—which is more important? No one know with certainty which one dominants. After many years of research and study, tendency is to give nearly equal value to the influence heredity and environment. Heredity playing a more important role in certain areas of an individual’s total make-up; and environment playing a more important role in other areas. The overall emphasis being to help the individual of whatever skills identify to, their skill or skills, advance them to the child’s limits and to live successfully with their abilities and skills to have a fruitful life.
