Encouragement
I was reflecting on Psalm 27:4, “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.”
The word ‘beauty’ stood out to me (a rhema word). I began to wonder exactly what was meant by the beauty of the Lord. I didn’t think it was referring to outward beauty because that sounded kind of shallow, and Isaiah 53:2 indicates that “…He (Jesus) has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.”
Granted that may have been true when Jesus was in His earthly body, especially during the ravages of the crucifixion, but when we see Him, He will be full of splendor and majesty. His beauty will be outward and inward. I wondered, in the Psalms passage, if there might be further meaning to the word beauty. So, I looked it up in Hebrew on my computer Bible program and was very surprised by the definition. The root word for beauty in Hebrew means: to be agreeable, to be a delight, pleasant, and sweet.
There it is. The biblical meaning of Jesus’ beauty is that He is an agreeable person who is pleasant to be around and is sweet. But, what exactly does it mean for Jesus to be agreeable? Putting an interesting slant on it, Bill pointed out that when something is agreeable, that means it fits. Yes, Jesus work on the cross is a perfect fit to our need for a Savior. Jesus is agreeable in being the answer to all of our needs, and in doing so he is both pleasant and sweet. That thought sounds so attractive, so appealing, so inviting.
Who wouldn’t want to be around a person with such likeable qualities? I love being around people who are agreeable, pleasant, and sweet. Don’t you? There is such warmth in that thought, that Jesus, living in us by the Holy Spirit, is relentlessly kind and tenderhearted in His sweet nature, continuously filled with gentleness and compassion. I am captivated by this revelation.
In that moment, the Holy Spirit spoke to me that He, too, is exactly like that. Agreeable, pleasant, and sweet. He is my Helper, the One who guides me into truth. Jesus said in John 16:13, “I have many more things to say to you…when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…. (Notice it says He guides, not He pushes). Like me, perhaps you have found that it is easier to hear truth if it is given by a person who is kindhearted, gentle, and tender, one who handles your emotions with care. That is the work of the Holy Spirit in us as He engages us in our daily walk. We can be confident in trusting Him because His character and love for us are impeccable.
