Our friend Lazarus sleeps
but I go, that I may awaken
him out of sleep. [John 11:11]
****************************
Place: Heaven
Time: During the third year
of the Ministry of Jesus.
Characters: Lazarus the brother of
Martha and Mary; Angel
Sylvestor, and Angel Briggund.

"Ya want another....OREO?"
Lazarus squinted at the odd shaped
food in Sylvestor's palm.
It was strange-looking, and
yet very sweet. But, everything
seemed strange, Here.
Lazarus, Angel Sylvestor
and Angel Briggund were
having a little picnic underneath
one of the huge trees that
spanned the River of Life as it
flowed out of the Throne Room.
The grass was sweet smelling,
and soft underfoot: the air
smelled spring fresh and clean;
everywhere grew strangely colored
flowers; beautiful butterflies flitted
about, and tiny blue birds sang
happily in the shade of the huge
trees. Nearby a lioness and three
cubs were fast asleep: curled up
together, and purring contentedly.
Animals were everywhere: docile,
plump, and just waiting to be
petted: wolves, tigers, grizzly
bears, and elephants.
One of the bears was asleep
beside Lazarus, and snoring quite
loudly: Oreo crumbs dotting
his big snout, and velvety nose.
"Sure, Sylvestor. So...this
little food tastes better
dipped in goat's milk?"
"Oh, YEAH!
HERE!"
Sylvestor handed Lazarus
a little jug of cold milk.
Then he leaned back against
the big pillow he always brought
on picnics; it was bright yellow
and had embroidered puppies
and kittens all over it. The blanket
the trio was laying on matched
Sylvestor's overstuffed pillow.
"TRY it!"
"Sylvestor!"
Angel Briggund interrupted;
he was still wearing his
Demon-Fencing-Practice
gear, and his fencing mask
kept sliding down over his
chubby face. Briggund was
frowning thoughtfully, and
pointing to the Oreo.
"Do you think we're supposed
to be showin' Lazarus all
this new....stuff? Afterall,
it doesn't come from his
Time...? Maybe we should
ask Michael about it!"
Sylvestor was busy dipping
the Oreo in the little jug
of milk: demonstrating to
his newfound Earth friend.
"Aw! No WORRIES, Briggund!
The Archangel is BUSY, today!
BESIDES....The LORD would
have told us if we couldn't DO
it!"
Briggund reached up to
scratch behind his left
wing. His fencing gear was
itchy after he wore it too
long; Briggund belonged to
one Archangel Michael's
Flying Warrior Units. He was
taking a short break with his
friends before he had to head
on out to his next Mission for
the LORD.
His friend, Sylvestor, worked
on one of the Prayer Mail Routes
from Earth; he always went with
a Mail Angel Buddy because he
got scared easily, and needed a
buddy in case one of the Demonites
ambushed him on the way to or
fro, from planet Earth.
"So?"
Sylvestor grabbed another
Oreo out of the bag, and
gently placed it on top
of the grizzly bear's black
nose. The bear's name was
'Pug'; he spent most of his
time in Heaven eating cookies,
sleeping in the sunshine, and
getting petted. Pug grunted
softly in his sleep, slurped out
his tongue up to his wet nose,
and suddenly the Oreo disappeared.
"I can't get over how tame
all of these animals...are!"
Lazarus was busy dipping
the sweet crunchy food into
his jug of milk, and letting
the fresh cool Heavenly breeze
blow through his brown locks
of curly hair. Heaven was absolutely
wonderful. The last thing he
could remember about back home
was the sobbing sounds of
his two kind sisters: Mary,
and Martha. Their small warm
hands were pressed against
his own which had grown quite
still, and very cold.
Then suddenly, he found himself
in this springtime lovely Paradise:
reaching out to pet purring
tigers, and accepting a big
picnic basket from one of the
many smiling angels that brought
him Here. So far he hadn't seen
any other people; perhaps they
were elsewhere: baking this
strange food, and serving the LORD?
What sort of work was he
to do Here? Lazarus wondererd.
Suddenly, the angels looked up.
Briggund said to Sylvestor,
"Did you hear....THAT?"
Sylvestor's big brown eyes
widened. "YEAH! What was...
THAT?"
The angels looked over to
see if their new friend had
heard it, also.
But,
he was
gone.
****************************
And when He thus had spoken,
He cried with a loud voice,
'LAZARUS! COME FORTH!'
