Somewhere between town and home , on a rural road, my life briefly intersected with a turtle. I found myself in a race to save its life. The problem was that I needed to get back home to get read for work. Now, I appreciate the Lord’s creation as a believer in Jesus Christ and do my best to care for what He’s created and fortunately the turtle was just past the center line when I came upon it and I safely passed by. As I drove on I found myself experiencing a strange desire to go back and help it finish its trek across the road. “But I need to get home so I can get ready for work,” was my complaint to the Holy Spirit. Taking a moment to contemplate the struggle that presented itself I discerned this to be a test of obedience.

I found a safe place to turn around and headed back for the turtle. As I got close to the spot where the turtle was a car was coming around the bend. My first thought was, “Surely they were able to miss the turtle.” But then I saw a horrible sight - a pick up truck was following less than a car length behind the car! I thought for sure the pick up truck could not have avoided the turtle and my opportunity to show obedience was lost.

Coming around another bend I came upon the spot where I first saw the turtle; to my relief he was still where I had last seen him. I was able to pull over, move the turtle across the road in the direction he was going, and be on my way.

Read the rest of the account with Elisha and Naaman. How often are we like Naaman in setting our expectations that the Lord will move in our life with some grand gesture. Many times the Lord is giving us an opportunity to show our willingness to be obedient. It is then the Lord will entrust us with greater things. The task? Don’t over look the little opportunities to do great things for the Lord.
